My Rossi is pretty forgiving on the "positive and definite" part, but I bought it new, and it's .22LR. My bolt-action Mossberg (also .22, a 340KC), asks that one be positive and definite about how I use the bolt, though. I have no idea how old it is or how many rounds have been through it, as I bought it used.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

When friends are too gentle with it, it can jam, but if you're positive (like you're in a cowboy shoot-em-up) it's smooth as silk. .357 Mag is a little different than .22 of course. Flip the lever down, flip it up, don't be a wuss about it and it runs like a charm. I also really like the balance of it.

I like all my long guns better than my hand guns. i just feel like I have far more control.

That's fair.

I recently saw a YouTube video from three years or so ago showing a woman testifying before some government committee. She mentioned having her mother shoot a pistol for the first time, having trouble hitting the target at five yards, but getting a fist-sized group at twenty yards with an AR15. No mention of whether the latter was done supported or free-hand, but I can readily see why someone with even a little lack of strength could do much better with a rifle than with a pistol.

Edited to add that I found the video again:

I would strongly encourage this idea. The .38/357 family of cartridges is among the most reloaded--possibly *the* most reloaded--and easiest of all cartridges to reload. I stopped counting when I hit 100,000 rounds of .38 Special.

BTW, our Rossi 92, 16" bbl, feeds our .38 Spl and .357M loads with aplomb. We've never have a problem with it. I haven't shot full wadcutter .38 Spl rounds through it, since my handload is easier shooting even than those, so YMMV may vary with full wadcutters. But with LSWC's, LRNFP's, JSP's, and JHP's, everything I've fed through ours, the rifle has digested it just fine and always went bang.

I would recommend either a Rossi 92, or alternatively, a Henry Big Boy side-loader, in .357M. All .357M firearms, with the possible exception of the Grizzly LAR pistol, do just fine with .38 Spl rounds, by design. Indeed, I refer to our powder-puff .38 Spl LSWC load as the "reloadable .22LR" because of how soft it feels out of the levergun.

You also would do just fine with a Winchester-brand gun, though you'll pay a lot more for it. I haven't tried an Uberti 92 action, but I'd suspect it's much like the Rossi version.

Love my Rossi 92 in 44 mag, 16" barrel. But...

Before I bought this last year I read a lot about it and owners complained of recoil. I thought, whatever, it's a pistol caliber round in a carbine. How bad can it be? I bought it and have been shooting it, and recoil is absolutely manageable.

The trick is if you try to shoot it from the bench or in prone position, the curved configuration of the buttplate (correct term?) puts a nice point right into your shoulder that is frankly quite painful after about 10 shots.

It's definitely not meant to be used from the bench, and that's not my intended purpose. But I was trying to sight it in a little better a couple days ago and was shooting from a rest and wow. Shooting standing or seated, no problem. It's not the recoil per se as much as it is that sharp corner in certain shooting positions.

Anyone with similar experience? Am I doing something wrong? Recommendations?

Love this carbine, but to quote Nazareth, sometimes love hurts.

Thanks.

I revived this thread a few days ago because Cabelas was listing a Glenfield (Marlin made JM stamped) 30-30 for just under $500. Metal looked good, but stock was in rough shape. I went to buy it because I thought even if I don't like it, I'll clean up the stock and sell for a profit. Ouch, it was gone by the time I got there. I hope it was one of you that got it. I think it was a steal. Seller confirmed yes, metal and bore were in great shape, just a cheap finish wearing off the wood.

I know I’ve posted this rifle on this thread before, but I haven’t been playing with it as near as much the .45 colt, Henry.

I brought the Henry big boy along to make sure the sights were still zeroed.

In fact, I don’t think I’ve shot it in over a year and a half. I just forgot how plain accurate and fun a .357 lever gun loaded with medium .38s is!

Target #5 is from the rest at 15 yards, target #2 is offhand at the same distance. I’m his is my medium-hit .38 load: 125 gr. LRNFP over 4.4 gr of win 231. Packs a wallop in the Air weight, but a pussycat in the Henry or N-Frame.

The .357 big boy has “skinner sights” and they were dead on - the indoor range only goes out to 20 yards.

One of those days - was shooting really well with .38s (in both revolvers I brought and the rifle) but lousy with all the semi autos I brought (mainly .32s) The Serbian, PPU ammo I brought is pretty hot, so that didn’t help my accuracy even off the rest.

I have a 1926 '92 in .38-40, and a 1927 '94 in .30-30...VERY cool rifles. I absolutely LOVE shooting vintage rifles with open sights. Killed a couple bears and hogs with the '94; it was grandpa's rifle. Only had the '92 for two years, and haven't hunted with it yet. I just love lever action rifles. my son is trying to get me to buy a '95, but i had one in the past and I didn't like it nearly as much as I thought I would.
