Looks like they worked with Everytown to come up with the policy.

The 1,800-outlet, $4.2 billion (market cap) company issued a brief statement on Monday after CEO Ron Shaich spoke to CNBC about the decision:
Within our company, we strive to create Panera Warmth. This warmth means bakery-cafes where customers and associates feel comfortable and welcome. To this end, we ask that guns not be brought into this environment unless carried by an authorized law enforcement officer. Panera respects the rights of gun owners, but asks our customers to help preserve the environment we are working to create for our guests and associates.
In the weeks and months leading up to this policy announcement, Panera Bread sought advice from Michael Bloomberg-backed Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, now part of the former Mayor’s $50 million Everytown nonprofit.

It appears more of the same: had Panera's new policy been in effect prior to this event, would anything have been different?

You jack people all up on carbs and someone will pull a gun.

“sketchy’’.
Within our company, we strive to create Panera Warmth. This warmth means bakery-cafes where customers and associates feel comfortable and welcome. To this end, we ask that “sketchy’’ people not be brought into this environment unless accompanied by an authorized law enforcement officer. Panera respects the rights of “sketchy’’ people, but asks our customers to help preserve the environment we are working to create for our guests and associates.

What they really mean by "Panera Warmth" is "No Trash".

I make a point of not eating at Panera or carrying a gun for no apparent reason, so, meh.

Read the NYT linked article. One of the witnesses described the guy as sketchy. Evidently "Panera Warmth" includes sketchy people but not those who legally carry and are not LEO.

I have never felt the need to be armed while purchasing a sandwich.

I probably ought to be wearing a helmet while getting drinks, however.

You have more to fear from the soda station and ice machine than you do from a CC patron; those things almost never get cleaned thoroughly enough to prevent the build up of mold. Don't ask me how I know.

Which would be why I don't really feel the need to eat anything that isn't out of my own darned kitchen.

I will respect their policy by not bringing my guns or my money into their establishments.

The same people who'll pay $9 for something called a Strawberry Poppy Seed Chicken salad sandwich. :ras:

The same company that was criticized for allowing blacks to only work in the kitchen out of sight.

Remember no guns out of sight or out of mind.

Never liked their bread.
