Re: Short article that says we have become too blase.
2I think we've become overwhelmed with hair on fire media. Latest blizzard is an example. Storm of the Century, one for the record books. its a snow storm. Deep and windy, but we don't need all the adjectives. We are a big country and we are almost force fed the bad news from everywhere in the world. Lots of causes to be upset over. You either filter the news or you are overwhelmed. I removed CNN from my cable menu and the world became a much nicer place. I still find out about what I want, but I chose to not attend the funerals of victims, unless I know them.
In spite of media reports otherwise, the US is becoming a safer nation all the time. Shootings in the mainland are decreasing. I've been in this little town for about 20 years. About half the homes have guns. Nobody has shot anybody. Not even at the trap range at the end of town. Occasionally a kid does something stupid, but you call the sheriff , he calls the kids mom, behavior changes. Granted, my town is an isolated example-but so is each mass shooting, statistically . If we are becoming blasé', I submit that it may be due to over reporting efforts and a need to fill air time. That, or we realize that a shooting event 1000 miles from home is not effecting our lives.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

3Nice summary of our metered reactions vs I don't know what the article writer feels would be an appropriate response.

Puffing up is no substitute for smarts but it's a common home remedy

4Agreed. Our civil liberties and American values are being eroded by a hyperactive media. We are anything but blase'dougb wrote:I think we've become overwhelmed with hair on fire media. It's pretty much All Hysteria All the Time.
Re: Short article that says we have become too blase.
6It's rather apparent what the author wants. The piece is a lament of government not doing something about the ownership of firearms. We have been hearing this "new normal"/business as usual refrain from gun prohibitionists since the media popularized and redefined mass shootings.Simmer down wrote:Nice summary of our metered reactions vs I don't know what the article writer feels would be an appropriate response.

7Hate to sound like an old fart but actually I am one. I grew up in Chicagoland. On a day like this Mom would just bundle us up and kick our butts out the door to get to school. The rest of the class was there, too.
I'm ok with shutting down airports when things become dangerous, the roads were dicey so be careful. No Moms drove kids to school.
I'll cut some slack for people who live where this rarely happens but no we are not blase, just over-mediated.

8I get the majority of news from a highly groomed list of Twitter/RSS feeds. It's almost always more accurate and to the point without commercials, pundits, hysterics, or hyperbole.
...and CNN and their ilk can f*@k right off. Even my news-junkie wife won't even watch the cable media outlets any more.

9Aye, but it's annoying when Twitter just repeats CNN/BBC/MSNBC!atxgunguy wrote:I get the majority of news from a highly groomed list of Twitter/RSS feeds. It's almost always more accurate and to the point without commercials, pundits, hysterics, or hyperbole.

Shooting stuff, while fun, is also real. Ergo, guns will save humanity.
