Looks like his contribution already has yielded results. Wintermute already has his remedy:
While Wintemute said that he knows that his research is valuable in preventing future firearm violence in America, he also pointed out that Congress should engage with the firearm regulations as the population sees necessary.

“I think we’re well beyond that breaking point, the people who are ready for change think that Congress will act, but the change that people need to make is to change Congress,” Wintemute said.

Firearm violence through Wintemute’s research has shown facts and statistics that debunk certain theories about those who initiate in homicidal acts. According to Wintemute’s research, the male sex, youth, alcohol abuse and a history of prior violence are all risk factors for violence in individuals, especially for the mentally ill.
Uhm... I'm not sure which "certain theories" were debunked, as those groups in his research were already well known to have higher than average representation for violence.

Where did a UC professor get that kind of personal dough?

Something's not right with this picture.
He is a long-time tenured MD; I suspect this contribution isn't taking food off his table. Not even close. Tenured UC professors make decent salaries, and the MD-variant make especially decent salaries. Also, he has a specialty- cardiac care - so give another bump up. And that doesn't count publishing books, a very lucrative side job that many faculty of his stature enjoy. And then also there are money-making opportunities from speaking (honoraria) as well executive education teaching. And he's been at his job for a very long time. No, I think the man's loaded. ;)

It also seems that he has had a special interest in firearms for at least a couple of decades, judging by his publishing history.

That makes sense. Thanks for the skinny on him.

Have you read any of his white papers on firearms? Might be an interesting read.

Likely a charitable contribution to offset capital gains, so he's actually diverting tax money to his research (and himself), rather than the IRS.

So now he has a nice kitty of money to pay himself to repeat the same old elitist bullshit we've heard for years about "gun violence" being a public health issue, that we shouldn't address mental health, poverty, social isolation and anomie, etc.

Now that i think about it, it's the same pattern of if/then that US elites offered the middle class in exchange for trade liberalization - if you let us ship jobs abroad, then we'll tax those who benefit and use all that money for social programs and job training. the first part happened, the latter didn't.

I'm glad my years working in the UC system finally paid off! ;) I've not read any of his papers, but he has many concerning 'gun violence,' versus violence in general. Given his interest on this over time, I would also be interested to see whether his conclusions have changed over time or have remained static, especially in light of the steep drop in homicides and crime in general over the course of his career.

I think Tincan's nailed his accounting for the contribution, too. :beer2:
