Authorities say they found 36 illegal machine guns in the home of a Millstone Township man who had an arsenal of 72 weapons.

John Lafergola, 52, appeared in federal court Tuesday to face accusations that he knowingly possessed machine guns, weapons that can fire more than once with one pull of the trigger, according to a release from the office of U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. Lafergola was detained without bail.

The criminal complaint against Lafergola shows on Oct. 5, 2014, police responded to a call at his home. It was alleged he pointed a handgun at another member of his household. After Lafergola consented to a search of his home, authorities found 72 guns and other firearm components, ammunition, accessories and manufacturing tools, the complaint said.

Those three included one 7.62 x 25 mm and two 9 mm rifles
