During the struggle, the suspect received a single gunshot wound from his own gun, but neither the officer nor the suspect received life-threatening injuries.

Police identified the injured officer as Nicholas Wayne Powell, 27, a five-year veteran of the police force.

The suspect was named as Gary G. Lynn, 26, of Raleigh. He is a convicted felon and wasn't supposed to be carrying a gun, Rountree said.
