NYPD spending $729K on 450 Colt M4 Commando SBRs

Yep--select-fire for a police force the city's previous mayor described as a military force. The term assault rifle applies here unless the original source, the NY Daily News, got it wrong.
http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2016/0 ... ic-rifles/
“The NYPD is spending more than $700,000 to buy automatic rifles for cops assigned to the Emergency Services Unit, the Daily News has learned. The purchase means every cop assigned to the elite unit will have their own rifle and will not have to share weapons, as has been the case, said Deputy Chief Edward Mullen, an NYPD spokesman.” The ESU will replace all its current guns, and use the “old” guns for practice. So, how much is that per gun? Glad I asked . . .
Mullen said the purchase is a reflection of the NYPD’s increased focus on terrorism in the wake of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif.

“This goes hand in hand with our active shooter concerns,” he said. “It also makes sense because of what is going on around the world.”
Unless the info is incorrect, the model must be the R0933 or R0935.

I'm sure he'll get right on that.

Different state legislature, but if the New York bill were to pass, legislators in other lost-cause states would take notice.
New York Democrats seek tight restrictions on ammo purchases
This kind of restriction would be more significant than some of what is already the the New York SAFE Act.

Well, first they would need to spend that money on marksmanship training.
For sure.
Never going to happen.

I don't think they'll spend money on training either even though they should. I also don't believe their civilian function requires fully automatic weapons. Considering what I was told by my CHL instructor an active law enforcement person that I'd be surprised how many officers barely pass and slink by with a minimum passing score; I certainly believe more training is required regardless of the weapons police carry.

I don't have a problem with the police having select-fire capability as long as I can have it, too. Select-fire is not going to afford these "elite" officers more accuracy, and they will likely just create more mayhem. But training is the key to dealing with that.

I'm still not entirely convinced the rifles are not actually LE6933s, which are semi-automatic SBRs marketed to LEAs. I will update the OP if that turns out to be the case.

That's also my point. I can't get one they don't need one.

I have it on very good authority that the pistol grip was invented to allow people to accurately spray-fire from the hip.

I do believe that's an Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department uniform.

*Dramatic license taken here, I don't know what he was testifying about when this picture was taken. It's quite possible he was lying about Scott drawing his weapon, cause ya know...he lied about that and all.
