Calif: More guns; less crime

This is a pretty balanced article.
Even as California has enacted some of the toughest gun laws in the country, firearm purchases in the state have steadily increased.

The number of handguns sold in California more than doubled between 2010 and 2014, with nearly a half-million transactions being recorded last year, according to state Department of Justice records

While gun crimes are down both in California and nationwide, there’s a perception, and some evidence, that mass shootings are on the rise.

“The actual violent crime rate is different from the perception of vulnerability,” said Chuck Michel
The article is from the SF Chron, and focuses on CA laws.

CDF, the article is behind a paid subscriber firewall, so most of us won't be reading it.

I am intrigued by the phrase "perception of vulnerability" in your quoted snippet. I think this is key to the psychology of the gun issue.

One side of this issue acquires guns, in part, to counter feelings of individual vulnerability. The other side feels collectively vulnerable because they feel surrounded by guns.

Not saying either side is right or wrong, just that we have to recognize and grapple with this.

I agree with your assessment, but I do not have a subscription and I could see it.

That people "feel" stuff should not be a reason behind a law. I feel threatened by fleas, so let's make a law. Nah.
