Racially Profiled? - for ammo inquiry at store

An East Bay woman visited a Dick’s Sporting Goods last week and asked a store employee about buying eight boxes of ammunition for her AR-15. Two days later, on Friday, Sim Sangha received an unwelcome visit by two police officers.
"I don't know if it's [because of] my skin color or that I’m Indian," she said. "I'm not a Muslim, but even if I were, that's no reason to call police to my home, instantly."
Sangha, a firearms instructor, didn’t buy ammunition for her rifle – the same kind used to gun down 14 people and injure 17 others in San Bernardino – and left instead with an exercise mask.

I'm guessing Dick's sells boxes of ammo all day long to white folks without an alarm being raised.

Should have mail ordered. Nothing like getting a few thousand rounds of XM193 delivered to your door.

The one time I went into Dick's Sporting goods and asked a question about a gun. I came to realize how they got their name. Not only was the clerk ignorant but very rude.
There is no excuse for that behavior or the actions in the story. I understand they are having financial troubles. Serves them right. karma is a bitch.

Probably, but it's not just a minority issue.

I swear I have seen Democrats pushing police investigation into bulk ammo buys.
My words:
Hi, Officer. Good Day! It seems that you have no warrant and I am not under arrest so I am going to have to ask that you step off my property. If you want a nice soda or water, I will be more than happy but I will not answer ANY questions unless ordered to do so in a court by a judge.

Only been in there once - about 2 years ago to buy ammo when I started shooting again. Asked if they had 22s, clerk said "Yes, but only one brand - how many boxes do you want?" I answered that 2 would be great, and was told there was a 1-box limit, in tones suggesting I should shouldn't be so greedy. Never went back.

They got out of the firearms business here. They sell accessories and airguns.

Oh, I agree completely. I try to mail order almost everything, usually better prices even with the shipping.
However, there are some places that have banned incoming shipments of anything gun related. And some merchants that refuse to ship *any*thing gun related to a questionable state, they see it as too risky.

The big box stores around here like Dick's, Sports Authority, and Academy tend to have gun counter clerks with limited knowledge of firearms. Cabelas and Gander Mountain seem a little better, though I did once hear a Cabelas clerk tell a customer she should carry the Ruger SP101 .357 revolver with an empty chamber aligned with the hammer (like an old time single action revolver) to prevent an accidental discharge.

The few times I've been in one of their stores, they have been overpriced and understocked...

See something say something, right?
The bigots see nothing wrong with bigotry, especially since a presidential candidate openly advocates for it.
The enlightened anti bigots would rather take the occasional terrorist hits than set the clock back 70 years.

This is pretty atrocious as it happens to be near my neck of the woods. Look, Fremont and the Bay Area in general has a pretty huge population of Indians and Southern Asians. It takes a particularly large set of bigoted cajones to pull this kind of profiling stunt. Not that I would excuse it if it happened in Montana or Idaho, but just that in my neck of the woods one should be pretty used to seeing all different shades of people (and genders) interested in firearms.

And this is pretty much a small vignette of what the War on Guns would look like. The real deal would of course come with a much higher body count and it wouldn't be the people the anti-gun mob is hoping would be the victims.

On one hand, I'm pissed about the on going blatant racial profiling with respect to firearms. In this case, granted with limited information, I have to ask whether or not this was a setup to poke racial profiling. What is the motivation of a person well versed in firearms, an instructor no less, to go into a big box store and just "inquire about 8 boxes of ammo for an AR"? No purchase, just "innocently asking questions".
I'm not taking the bait and gonna call bull fucking shit. Shame on Dick's for calling the cops but I also call pox on the woman for the blatant setup. We need an honest discussion on the issues, not more BS political posturing.

What's the big deal about 8 boxes of ammo? At 20 rounds per box that's only 160 rounds total. In an hour of range practice I can easily spend that amount.

I don't know how I feel about this or the video. I need to google and read more examples.
True story. They had a couple of medium-small wildfires in Texas over the Summer and one was in the Waco area (little further South). Let's just say an area with a high proportion of the "Don't Tread On Me" spirit. The local Fire Marshall said they have to be careful in approaching houses being threatened by fire because a high proportion of them have a tendency to blow up from all the ammo stockpiled. This was on the Dallas news broadcasts so you might find references online.
I chuckled about the story but then got to thinking. At what point does stockpiling raise an eyebrow? In the OP story you have questions raised about eight boxes of ammo, and then you have instances of Fire Marshalls being afraid of getting near a house fire because of all the stockpiles.
Like I said, I'm not sure what to think about the ammo subject.

That probably had more to do with the .22 shortage that was happening at the time. There are to this day Wallmarts where people know exactly when they unpack the ammo shipment so that they can buy all the .22s and some other calibers that were running shortages as well.
I never figured out why .22s were under such demand. I mean really, how much squirrel jerky can one eat? Great plinking round too, but there were people buying multiple bulk cases which I could never figure out.

Carry as in concealed carry or carry around the house/range? I don't know which is worse, the clerk or the customer. They make pink pistols for customers like this....

Customers like what?
See something, say something is just about letting the law enforcement get away with profiling by having non-cops do it.

It's not the quantity, I rarely buy less than 200 rounds at a time. I guess the number of cliches in the story and the current FUBAR political rhetoric just pushed me over the top. It could have been worse - could have been a middle eastern looking male wearing a turban, robe, and utility vest with a bunch of friends outside in a white utility van... who turn out to be an elite anti-terrorism unit on their way to special forces training.
My filter is about gone with all the nonsense.

I'm more shocked that a Dick's Sporting Goods had more than just overpriced Federal Fusion hunting rounds in .270 WMR, .30-06 and a few stacks of 20ga. shot shell.

Any firefighter personnel or other first responders who are worried about ammo exploding in a fire needs more training. Watch this for education from people who have investigated pretty extensively:
