The social and political heat in Chicago, engendered by the Laquan McDonald shooting, seems to be rising despite a drop in national coverage.

The first three or four items in this Politico.com report make that clear.

Emanuel will make the crisis work in his favor by shrieking more loudly about guns. He has friends in high places to help ensure any federal probe goes his way.

Could be, but I don't think it will play out so easily for Emanuel.

For one thing, the people in Chicago know the issue isn't guns, and they're the people who count in this fight. For another, friends in high places tend to be hard to reach when you screw up. They can delay the federal probe, but I don't think they'll risk much on his behalf.

Few people really like Emanuel, and by now those who once owed him are all even in the favors bank. His "friends" are looking at 2016, weighing who's a help and who's a hindrance. If Emanuel can't deliver Cook County, he has no friends.

I have to agree with Paco's assessment. When you're long on allies, but short on friends, and you get into deep political shit, don't expect anyone to stick their necks out to help you.

Just ask recalled California Governor Gray Davis.

It amazes me that Obama emerged from the cesspool of Illinois politics without reeking. The most his most hateful detractors could come up with was the birthing and Muslim nonsense.

The current Mayor of Chicago's (former White House Big Shot who was dumped) might not have his calls to the President returned.

I'm only pounding on this because I believe it's going play out as a much bigger issue than it seems now. Cook County is the Dem's key to Illinois, and the situation there is a catastrophe about to get even worse.

HRC and Bernie are on tiptoes, throwing halfhearted little jabs at Emanuel, but somebody better throw a real combination, and it better be soon. The Rethugs are not going to ignore this problem.

Here's a link to a recent analysis.

It just doesn't sit well with me when he fires someone to save his butt and then expects everything to be all rosie and fine.

If he really cares he needs to resign immediately.
