So sequels! First the trailer
[youtu_be]
http://youtu.be/GqAllf_BKEw[/youtu_be]
I saw Independence Day at the on base theater in Wurzburg Germany, stood in line for almost an hour and the theater was completely full. If you were ever in the older AAFES theaters you would know that it was one screen and could fit like 500 people in there, that poor poor AC unit couldn't keep up. I won't lie I enjoyed the movie immensely, despite its flaws its just good clean summer fun. Plus I think seeing it with such a big crowd also helped my enjoyment as the audience was really in to it.
Not sure what to think of the trailer, except needs moar fresh prince. I hope its entertaining, I'll probably go see it but I like my popcorn summer blockbuster movies loud and explodey.
Also, does everything have to be a sequel these days?

Jeezus. I loathed the first movie.

I thought the first one was lame too.
I mean, why even break orbit? Just drop asteroids on the population centers and then offer the survivors double rations for turning-in resistance fighters.
Plus, a Macbook taking-out a fleet of spaceships? What the hell were they using as an OS, Windows 3???
Sorry man, I just couldn't get into it.

Same reason so many movies are made from comic books. A massive failure of imagination.

Hollywood formula to make millions. That's the only reason. There were gaping plot holes in the first one, sure. But it wasn't intended to be a serious movie. Or even a good sci-fi movie. Just a chance to show off cgi and make a bunch of money

Yeah pretty much, I enjoyed it for what it was...which was loud and explodey. Also I was 14 when it came out and I saw it, so that may also explain my fondness for it.

If they don't call this one "MEMORIAL DAY" I will be disappointed.

Independence Day, Armageddon, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, James Bond, the TV series Leverage, I enjoyed all of them because I didn't bother worrying about plot holes. I took them for what they were. Romps is the term. Realism would diminish them. I think that the answer lies in another romp called GI Jane-
Nurse: Lieutenant, why are you doing this?
GI Jane: Do you ask the guys that?
Nurse: Yes, actually.
GI Jane: What do they say?
Nurse: "Because I get to blow shit up."
GI Jane: (chuckles) Well, there you go.
Enjoy the movie. And turn off your fuckin' cellphone.

I actually surprised they sequeled it. Given the number of movies where they dust off the script and "reboot" it.
Personally, I would have made it so a group of aliens survived and formed a resistance. In a small town. Full of people who can't figure out what's happening, are always going towards the strange noise, split up for no reason, and fall down a lot.

According to the available material now that is sort of what happened. If you go to
http://www.warof1996.com it give a timeline of sorts for between the first and the upcoming movie. There is a blurb about a tribe in the Congo fighting alien survivors.
I will say that according to the time line they are following along the correct progrssion in that we salvaged as much from them to advance our selves as we could. The whole world peace thing though is a bit of a stretch.

I like movies that are loud and explodey. The more shit that gets blown up, the happier I am. Was the plot of ID4 lame and full of more holes than a hunk of Swiss cheese? Sure. Did I care? No.
I already have my tix for The Force Awakens. So there.

What's "The Force Awakens". I haven't heard of it. Has it been advertised anywhere?

groups of humans often take a break from killing each other when confronted by an external threat.

Wasn't the first Independence Day movie the one that basically jump-started the age of what I'll call "CGI spectacle porn"?
The series of summer movies where the CGI effects were the real star of the show and everything else didn't matter: simple, cliche stories with uninspired archetype characters (with no development or arc) that served only as an excuse for bombastic special effects.
All that said, Independence Day was among the most enjoyable of that lot only because it had the sheer charisma of Will Smith to carry it.
The sequel looks like it's taking itself too seriously and it apparently doesn't have Will Smith... So why bother?

Well, if their goal was to plunder Earth's resources then asteroids would be a bad idea. They'd kick up tons of debris that would block out the sun and make Earth uninhabitable, they'd disrupt valuable mineral formations, etc..
You know what's sad? I've probably just now put more thought into it than the writers ever did.

park a really big parasol between earth and the sun and wait a decade or so for everything to die of starvation or hypothermia. easy-peasy. no need to get your tentacles dirty.

So they used all the new technology they back engineered to create more advanced weapons, but didn't bother to figure out how to repair one of the spaceships to travel the universe. Typical.
Of course, humans in space would be bigger parasites than these things could ever be.

Could be worse. At least no one is trying to take an awful 80s cartoon like "Jem and the Holograms" into a live action modern update.

I await the inevitable CGI/Real people gritty re-boot of Gummi Bears (BOUNCING HERE AND THERE AND EVERYWHERE FOR BLOOD AND HONOR!)
Speaking of super explodey and loud movies in the same "family" as ID4 I really enjoyed Battle Los Angele more than I probably should have. So much so that its one of the few movies I've actually purchased the Blu Ray for (I usually buy my movies/tv shows digitally these days).

And why the industry has failed to reboot Thundercats is beyond me...

Speaking of
The twist is that the plan is for this G.I. Joe-verse to include several other Hasbro action figure lines, including M.A.S.K., Visionaries, Rom: Space Knight, and the Micronauts.
Once again no Thundercats, and of course we're getting another Michael Bay TMNT abomination.
