The first Saudi women ever to cast ballots in the kingdom hugged, took souvenir selfies and spoke cautiously of more openings during groundbreaking elections Saturday that marked another step in social reforms but failed to stir a major turnout at the polls.

Still, there was no denying the sense that the ultraconservative kingdom had passed an important moment that fundamentally changes the definition of citizenship for half the country – and, in turn, further reorients Saudi policies away from more uncompromising interpretations of Islam.

With every passing day, the world becomes a tiny bit more Liberal. Gay Marriage? Not a chance? Gays in the Military? No frikkin' way. Legalized marijuana? Maybe in Jamaica mon, not gonna happen here. Saudi women going to the polls? In yer dreams pal.

Little by little. Today was a good day.

That's great but also embarrassing. It's 2015. And this is the country we've been allied with for 82 years? "Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are."

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an outbreak of liberalism; I expect that the House of Saud and their Wahabbist partners have the brake pedal firmly under foot in case people get any funny ideas about pushing their luck. Still. It is a step in the right direction, and I'm not so cynical that I hope it won't lead to more. So

to those women who voted, the men who support it, and for the germ of liberation that may grow into something bigger.

I think this is pretty cool. It will take at least one generation for things to soften there, but they will.
