I'd like to know too. I've been doing the hard way and going through an FFL dealer and background check, etc.

That's because you are a law-abiding citizen. Anyone knows it's only the criminals and terrorists who have their guns shipped to their door. Sheesh.

FBI Director, huh? Hmmm... you'd think he would know the answer to that.

It's shipped to your FFL. After you negotiate the price, arrange for your FFL to send a copy of his license to the seller, who then ships to the licensed address.

This is the same doofus that is demanding the government force the computer makers to put backdoors in the software so they can read your encrypted messages and mail. But they assure us it will only be done under warrants. He had also stated the shooters in the San Bernardino shooting were not on the terror list but the FBI couldn't read their messages and prevent the shooting. How could they have known about the shooters if they were flying under the radar and had no reason for a warrant. He is definitely one of the were the government and we know what's good for you guys.

Well it is different for intra and inter State transfers.

I was under the impression too that long guns must be touched by an FFL on only one side of the transaction. I thought that if you purchased a rifle from an FFL they could ship a long gun direct to you. But I could not find anyone following the rule like this, so my understanding must be wrong.

I don't knock the guy for not being exactly sure of this because there are some recognized variations. Better to say I'll get back to you on that than say something that is not precisely correct and get jumped on for not providing an entirely correct answer.

I guess he could have said it like that, that in general a firearm must be mailed by an FFL to an FFL, but there are some special circumstances.

The only time I bought a firearm over the internet and had it shipped directly to my door was an M1 Garand from the CMP, a non-profit chartered by Mr. Comey's employer, the U.S. Federal Government.

Ironic, ain't it?

(To be completely accurate, several states including CA now require CMP firearms to go through FFLs. But when I bought my first Garand about four years ago, and still today in most states, CMP ships directly to the buyer.)

I believe they do a 4473 though.
