What does homicide rate have to do with the discussion at hand?

Not sure what it has to do with assault weapons either for that matter.

Not sure what suicides have to do with the thread either? The second link includes both homicides and suicides, with a gun being used as the implement. In neither are "Assault Weapons" much more than a statistical blip on the radar compared to handguns.

They had separate suicide numbers by gun and other if you wanted to break them out. But the first chart was more interesting. Numbers for homicide by gun really hasn't changed much over the years but the overall homicide rate has gone down overall.

If we're comparing total numbers to rate, the same could be said of the overall homicide rate and the total number of homicides. The total US population has grown by about 20% since 1993, so a lower rate given the same total number of incidents (relatively) is expected.

The cities don't have a problem with guns. They have a problem with people.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Blah blah blah.

I'd prefer running into my mugger holding his gun rather than his pistol.

i've wondered recently why we call all ak##-based weapons ak, but we have a separate naming convention for semi-vs-full auto ar-type rifles.

Except criminals, by definition, ignore laws prohibiting them from doing things.

Like mugging you, for example. They will always arm themselves, regardless of legal prohibitions.

Outlawing weapons only disarms the law-abiding citizen, who has already chosen not to mug folks.

If you could magically remove firearms from America (and you can't), and control their importation from abroad (you can't do that, either), you would find yourself disarmed and your mugger wielding a hatchet, machete, or chainsaw.

In any case, I have a house full of guns, and none of them have jumped up and started killing folks yet.

Because we DIW. Even AKM (Автомат Калашникова Модернизированный) is incorrect. AK variants do not have a term analogous to AR-15, which conveniently covers all semi-automatic carbines that fit the old 5.56mm NATO Armalite pattern. Though also all-inclusive for AK variants, AK-pattern gets the job done in most cases since, at least in the gun world, it suggests semi-automatic carbine variant of the AKM/AK-47 given someone who owned the latter would be highly-motivated to brag about his/her highly-prized NFA Kalashnikov. Obviously, AK variant fulfills about the same role as AK-pattern.

Though even broader, AR-pattern almost works as well in place of AR-15 for AR variants, since anyone with a genuine M-16 or AR-10 likely would not be able to contain his/her glee and would want to differentiate his/her hardware from all the knock-offs.
