Jeff Cooper's Commentaries

From time to time when the family is sated and getting settled, I have a half hour or so to mess around. So usually I haul out one of the rifles--tonight it was the Garand--and pull up Jeff Cooper's commentaries and haul out
Hatcher's Notebook, a copy of which I just only recently snagged.
Cooper really is a neat guy despite some his more conservative political leanings. He writes colorfully about rifles, and I dig that. But only in some quiet times. His is writing that has to be savored a bit more than most average internet stuff. He makes references that make me dig into
Hatcher's. So it's a lot of fun.

So haul out a rifle or two and pull up Cooper's Commentaries. For kicks and giggles of course.
Tonight I found where he claimed that all you need is a .22 and a .30-06/.308. But not if you listen to the merchandisers. Interesting cat.

I'm not sure I've ever read anything kind about him that wasn't written by him.

I have 'To ride, Shoot straight & Speak the truth' read it several times over...I'll now at this posy read some more Col. Cooper.
I liked his no nonsense approach...some of the younger set could learn a thing or two from his writings.
I especially like some of the historical material he wrote...a unique perspective from another age.
His mussing on the joined horn infidel are classic as well as his hunts on on the Okavango.

I thought all one needed was a .22LR and a 7.62x54R!

I've heard the name, looked up his history once or twice. But never really read his works.
But I must say a Ruger GSR Scout Rifle is always tempting. Handled one at a gun show a week ago, pretty nice.

That's just Russian for .30 cal. They lose some accuracy in conversion from the original арши́н, or arshin.

They can't hear you. They're banned.
When you see the profile square beneath their name and they have a link to a sales site it looks fishy. When the post is pure babble it's a sure deal.

I've been reading the Jeff Cooper Commentaries as well. One of the neat things is that he mentions Ted Bonnet, a local guy in San Antonio who runs weekend matches and mentors people (including myself) about shooting, as one of the best shooters. It's cool to see the connections in the competitive shooting community. There's such a rich history behind shooting and the modern pistol technique.

Hearty congratulations to Mike Plumb of the Columbus, Ohio, SWAT Team! You may have seen the excellent photography that was taken of an action in which Mike shot the pistol out of the hand of a street goblin with his service rifle. No one mentioned the range, and I doubt that it was great, but the action was carried out expertly and we all admire the officer's performance. The Chief of Police of Columbus attributed this success to excellent training, but we should note that training does not make for excellence. Excellence in any activity is a product of talent and dedication. Training helps, but by itself it is not enough.
Hey, at least he didn't use the N word...
