I've somehow got this damn Search it Know malware and can't shake it. I see all these other downloadable files that promise to root it out but I don't know. Google has been replaced with some stunt browser that won't leave.
Anyone have the name of a legit file that will help out here?
Re: My browser has been hijacked
4Malbytes is running and picked up something already. I hope its the one that is driving me nuts.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Puffing up is no substitute for smarts but it's a common home remedy

5I also recommend HijackThis.
HOWEVER, HijackThis is for advanced users. It gets a lot of false positives. After a scan it will ALWAYS come back with lots of stuff. However, it was the ONLY way I removed a particularly nasty hijacker recently. The hijacker in question had been almost entirely removed, but one piece still kept causing random links to redirect. Even uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome didn't work. HijackThis found a registry entry that directed Internet Settings autoconfig to some weird URL. Once removed, the problem was solved.

Re: My browser has been hijacked
6Yikes. I had this a couple of times when installing some freeware/shareware programs. There's always some sneaky thing that installs a new new default search page/startup page that is REALLY HARD TO REMOVE.
Well it looks like you're already running a few things. What I try to do is on a different browser/computer, I search for the search engine's name and how to remove it. Usually comes up with some good information of how to remove the stupid replacement search page.
The lesson is, when you install stuff, read carefully of what is being offered, and never allow it to install any extra programs.

i'm retired. what's your excuse?
Re: My browser has been hijacked
8Ugh, I fought that stupid hijack for a while. Ended up doing a clean install of Windows 10.
Kind of a RPG vs ant hill approach, hope Malwarebytes works better for you than it did for me. I just got tired of dealing with my registry.

9Best thing: go to Geekstogo forums. You can post your log there and get help from volunteers who tell ya what to do. Good stuff.
I use ADWcleaner, MBAM, Hijackthis and other tools.
Hope you get this stuff cleared up.

10Also for preventative measures, install ad blocker plus. Outside of your porn site problem, most of that crap gets served up by ads, and ad blocker prevents that bullshit from even popping up. Usually. I'd guess you'll probably need to completely uninstall whatever browser you normally use, also check your add/remove programs for anything you don't recognize, and then run all the malware removal stuff. I really hate those bastards who create it. Knock on wood I haven't had to do a full re-install of windows in the last few years because of one though.
Re: My browser has been hijacked
11I like using an offline scanner like Kaspersky Rescue Disk for real nasty malware cleanup. I was able to help my sister clean some nastys off her PC with it.
