I a new member and haven't posted much on the Forum. However, I do visit the forum page each day to read the threads which peak my interest. I find most comments entertaining and/or enlightening. I am an activist by nature and training. I was a veteran advocate in my working life as well as a union organizer and local union president with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). I had to retire due to poor health and have been out of the sh#t stirring business due to those health problems and it is a real pain in the arse.
As I sit in front of my TV each night, I have become more and more angry at the vitriolic and hysterical rhetoric and overt racism on display in America especially toward Syrian refugees. The last straw was Ben Carson's comment equating Syrian refugees including children to rabid dogs. What a douche bag (all due respect to feminine hygiene products). So instead of fuming at my wife about the idiots on the TeeVee every night, we decided to act. My wife and I are sponsoring a Syrian refugee boy and girl through Save the Children. It is our way to express support for those fleeing the tragic events in Syria and Iraq, especially the children. It is also my figurative middle finger to those cowardly, despicable human beings scapegoating Syrian refugees and their children for the acts of Daesh.
I would also like to propose a LGC fundraiser in support of Save the Children's Syrian child refugee efforts. Save the Children is well regarded and is recognized as a reputable charity. Eighty-nine (89%) percent of donated funds go to direct aid. The following are some specifics of this fund raising proposal:
1. your donations would go directly to Save the Children's Syrian refugee effort
2. a unique LGC Team page would be setup on Save the Children's website
3. members donate directly to Save the Children on behalf of the LGC Team via this fund raiser page
5. your donations are 100% tax deductible
If you want more information on Save the Children and their Syrian refugee efforts please visit http://www.savethechildren.org.
I have discussed this proposal with Inquisitor to ensure it doesn't violate club rules and he has assured me it does not. I encourage your input and feedback and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have via either PM or on this thread. If there is enough interest, I will proceed with setting up LGC's fund raising page and notify everyone when it is operational and ready to accept donations. I will also provide regular feedback on the progress of this fund raising effort.
I look forward to your comments and feedback.

2Unless anyone can think of a reason not to give money to Save the Children as the recipient of this, and would propose an alternative charity.
I am ok with folks going forward and bundling donations this way.

Me, too...go for it.

4I think it is a great idea. I'd also propose that if you were considering getting folks any holiday gifts this year, cut back on those or give to this or a charity like this in their name instead.
EDIT: Was going to make a snarky point about other folks to donate on behalf of, but in the interest of keeping it clean, I'll refrain.

5I'm good with it, and I'm good having my name attached to that sort of thing re: this club.

8Gave it a week. Obviously not enough interested to proceed. To those that expressed support/interest, I encourage you to visit the Save the Children website and explore a donation.

9I'm interested. I didn't know we had to express said interest here. I was just waiting for instructions.

11Bravo! I'd love to see something set up so we can bundle in name of LGC. Great idea.
