San Francisco to impose more gun restrictions

"We have to make it inconvenient for people to carry weapons," about covers it. The pretext is stolen guns.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- There may be tougher gun legislation coming to San Francisco in the wake of a rash of firearms stolen from parked cars.

Supervisor David Campos' original bill required only law enforcement officers to secure their guns in their cars, but now he had amended it to include every gun owner because he says it has become an increasing problem.

It's becoming a familiar, dangerous refrain guns stolen from cars, sometimes belonging to cops and sometimes ending in tragedy.

That's why Campos introduced tougher gun legislation for gun owners. It would require storing them in lockboxes attached to the car and in SUV's, with the automatic release levers disabled. Earlier, Campos gathered his supporters.

It is currently illegal to store a firearm in the glove box or "utility compartment" unless you have a LTC (License To Carry). Utility compartment, which probably was meant to cover the console between the seats, has no legal definition. For years it has been argued on CA gun forums against bolting a box to the vehicle as then it could be conceived as being part of the vehicle and thus a utility compartment.

Now this legislator is suggesting legislation which could be a violation of other laws. I guess it's like going out on the back porch and firing off a shotgun in the air to ward off possible evildoers.

Why would anyone leave a firearm unsecured in their car? If I have to leave mine, which if I know beforehand I usually go without, I always remove the barrel and mag, and put slide and frame in different spots in the car. I usually take a
The mag and barrel with me if I can

Over kill¿ maybe, but if it is stolen, it won't kill anyone unless the thieves spent a couple hundred on a barrel and mag.
This is just my opinion, yours may vary and is no less valid.

Probably none. There has been a big increase in car break-ins in the Bay Area. I would be surprised if the cars were targeted for firearms instead of the guns just being part of the loot along with gym clothes and empty reusable grocery bags.

Plus two of the four examples were unmarked LEO vehicles.

Why would anyone leave a gun in their car? I guess if you were licensed to carry but had to go to a courthouse or a restricted place, you couldn't well bring that gun with you. Of course, I don't know if most of the burglarized civilian cars in question were parked in front of courthouses or not.

Generally speaking, I think people should lock up their guns in some sort of fashion if they want to keep it in the car. However, like the other thread about safe storage laws, how the government enforces the law, or how it will have any real effect on safety, burglaries, crime, or the price of tea in China is less obvious.

New and Old money always fear the ones they've used to get their wealth. I am wondering if that is also what might be helping to drive the media and political push of the Anti Gunner policies now ?

Anti gun policies are nothing new here. Gun restrictions get unanimous votes from the board of supervisors, but like the article says a recent vote to expand the police force barely passed.

Exactly - like into the PO Box area of a post office as well as a handful of other restricted areas - soon to include school campuses.

Why would anyone vote for DiFi? Also why would anyone believe they have an epidemic of guns being stolen from peoples cars?
The gun that the undocumented immigrant used to shoot the young lady which became one of Donald Trump's talking points was stolen from the automobile of a federal agent parked outside City Hall.

By the way he did not intend to kill her. He was evidently playing with the gun and it went off. The bullet ricocheted off the concrete pier and struck the young woman killing her. Tragic.

Except that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Seems a number of LE have had guns stolen from them. The best one is the guy who paid a hooker and then she took off with his gun and badge when he was asleep. Talk about a world of hurt. How do you explain that a woman you just paid for sex stole your gun and badge.
