Windows 10 worth downloading?

1
I currently have Windows 8 and don't think much of it. Microsoft keeps nagging me to download a free update to Windows 10. Anybody here using 10 and if so, what do you think of it? I am using a desktop computer and all of those tiles in 8 are somewhere between useless and annoying.

I downloaded Windows 10 to my mom's computer, which had been running Windows 8.

I'm a Mac guy so take this with a grain of salt.

The download and re-start went seamlessly, and it seems to be bug-free, so far. I haven't seen any conflicts yet, and it does seem to be faster than before. I really despised the start page with Windows 8, and that's gone; Windows 10 has a menu on the side that is handy. Overall, it seems much more intuitive and easy to use than before, in addition to being faster.

Again, this is not my main computer, so value my experience accordingly. As much as I (and anyone else I've ever talked to) hated Windows 8, it seems like a substantial improvement, and I haven't run into anything so far that would lead me to think it's not worth doing.

Good luck!

I have it and adjusted OK and I'm an old man. It's like my Lumia phone so it was familiar. There are some whistles and bells I opted out of. I don't want some program to guess what I want or need. I like to at least pretend i have a certain level of privacy.

I've upgraded 5 computers to 10 so far. Only one minor issue that was easy to resolve. I'd still put your important stuff somewhere safe, but the smoothest upgrade I've been through. Had it running since it released in August on mine. Much better interface, runs a bit quicker. More intuitive IMO. Windows 8 was an abomination, so I skipped it for my pc, my family all hated it as well.

Holy cow! Another Windows Phone user?!
10 is pretty much as described. Honestly, I'm not sure how long you'll be able to continue without updating to it. On my laptop, I dont use the tiles much. Wife's touch screen PC with 10 is very cool. Assimilate, be happy.

I would go for it, especially from Windows 8. I upgraded a bunch of Win 7 and some Win 8 computers. Issues were minor and you won't see them on a standard upgrade (problems with GPT partitions when dual-booting, search feature sucks in the last build, Cortana is annoying). My IT guys are testing builds for eventual production deployment and haven't reported anything serious.

It's much better than 8 and keep in mind that free upgrade goes away in 7/2016. Support for Win 8 ends in 1/2018.

As always, back up critical personal data before upgrading.

YMMV
I've got QB PRO 2005 I was told would not work in Win 7, now upgraded to 10. I found that if I bypassed auto run and opened install exe it loaded all proper and functional - so far no problems. Did same with my old ACT!2005 customer DB and it works fine, too.

As to op's original question, I was pleasantly surprised upgrading my Win 7 machines - compared to 8 or 8.1 (I never installed, but do maintain several 8/8.1 machines), installing 10 is a no brainer - I've upped 3 to 10 and no regrets. I still use XP on my business machine and use win 10 machine as back up as couple of items WON't work with 10, but that is rare I've found. You can turn off near all the tracking crap and extraneous crap MS tries to shove off on you when installing or after install. The new IE sucks IMO and I hate their mail program and Outlook is a POS, again IMO. Networking can be a bear (three different OS's), but once it's up and running fairly stable.

all I will say on this is that 8 will have free support until 2023. Starting in , I think I read late 2016, Windows 10 is going to start costing you $9.95 a month is you want support, which includes but not restricted to, security patches, virus updates, improvements, ect.. and tech support. Many are calling it, Ransom-ware..

The Free upgrade is just that...free.

If you have problems after the install you'll get no 'free' tech support if things go awry.
So...as with previous 'upgrades' from one Windows OS to a newer one (98 to ME, ME to XP, XP to Vista and so on....) Historically it's been a crap shoot.

Always go with the full version and start with a fresh install and don't chance the 'upgrade'.

and....be sure to backup all your important files FIRST before doing any upgrades.

Never install one OS over the top of another existing OS on your Hard Drive.

That is highly unlikely.

Windows offered free tech support for a couple months with each upgrade. But its not the upgrade or tech support I read about that could be the problem, its the patches. And there is no one confirmation from windows or anyone else that states they are not going to a pay by the month system once you swap out to 10, like they did with Office..

Installed it no sweat on several machines, 3 in place upgrades one fresh install with a license I purchased for a new build. It was the smoothest and fastest install I've seen yet. I've had almost no issues with it, even on my heavily overclocked machine. I loathed 8 and 8.1 (had it on laptops, still ran 7 ultimate on my main PC) just so so much. 10 is pretty great.

Yeah, this is myth stemming from a misunderstanding of the original release statements . Windows 10 will not require a monthly subscription for anything.

Well that is good to finally see confirmation one way or the other.

Thanks !

Well, several things orbiting my brain here.

1st, Windows 8 sucks, I'm not the only one thinking this.

2nd, for my purposes 10 would be better....if I can install it right.

And a warning about seeing if my "apps" will still work (apps = programs?) lead me to a site that said that my antique Office 2000 will not work on Windows 10. It also told me it will not work on Windows 8 - which it does just FINE. All I need to do with office is write a letter now and then or add to the Excel spreadsheet of my comic book and Classical CD collections.

So yep, I still buy CDs and Office 2000 still meets my needs. But Windows 8 does not.

I still have the master hard drive from my XP driven former computer. Hmmmm.....
