I think they use customized Ruger Mini-14s.

The line between the French military and police can get a little blurry. The Gendarmerie Nationale is part of their armed forces and is under the Ministry of Defense although operationally attached to the Ministry of the Interior. The Police Nationale are closer to what we think of as civilian police.

For greater threats the police use slightly modified Ruger Mini-14s purchased in the 1970s.

Or even just some rope to make their own.. But you know, mini 14 isnt the worst choice for this. At least it prevent panic spray at 900 rounds a minute ..

I think in the right hands it's a great choice. They're just a rail and cheap red dot away from looking like they weren't fished out of a dusty box at an Ozark garage sale. :) (Disclaimer: I love my Mini-14)

Unlike the US, they don't want their law enforcement looking like commandos. An overall principle I agree with.

I think you got a rare bad one. A past friend absolutely loved his and we put a lot of rounds, handloads and bulk surplus, through his. We never had problems and I've heard uniformly good things about it from others who owned one.

The Mini 14 isn't an assault rifle, it's a sporting rifle and a police rifle. It's not a military grade assault rifle and it never has been.

That said, in the hands of someone well trained, it doesn't matter what their foe is armed with. As long as the Mini is working, it's a lethal threat to anyone down range. I wouldn't want anyone shooting at me with one.
