OK, it's not guns, but I've always been perplexed that I could get a license to carry a concealed firearm but not certain types of knives. A couple good quotes from the article:
"We need laws on criminal activities, not on objects."

"The Sharks and the Jets are in their 80s now," he said, "I don't think we have to worry about them."

Current Texas laws restrict possession of blackjack, nightstick, mace (spray or medieval weapon?), tomahawk (hell yeah, Cochise), knife with a blade over 5.5", dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stilletto, and poniard (dare thou carry that?); bowie knife, sword, spear, Knuckles, "Switchblade knife" means any knife that has a blade that folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath, and that:(A) opens automatically by pressure applied to a button or other device located on the handle; or(B) opens or releases a blade from the handle or sheath by the force of gravity or by the application of centrifugal force. Chemical dispensing device (clears up the mace question) and the old favorite, the Zip gun.

Looks like we'll never catch up to New Hamshire.

True switchblades are still illegal; the spring assist knives are what you can now buy.

Here in missouri, you have to have to be a leo to even look at them.

The way I see it, there's only 1 use for them...so it's easy to figure out what side I'm on ;)

There great for cutting away your main chute when sky diving when it fails to open correctly.

When I was a kid, everybody carried a switchblade in their fishing kit, for when you had one hand full of fish.

I have a couple that I ordered online and used to carry around. I stopped when I got my CHL. Now they collect dust in my gun cabinet.

The ban on switchblades was one of the stupidest laws of all time. A push button knife is one of the handiest things ever designed when one hand is filled with fly line, there is a fly rod under your arm, and the trout decide they want a #22 Adams instead of the #28 BWO you have on the tippet. It's just another example of what chickenshits Americans have become. And what, pray tell, is the difference between a switchblade, which is illegal, and the Kershaw assisted opening knife [which is legal] that is in my pocket right now? The Kershaw assisted opening does open faster than any switchblade I've ever owned and it holds a better edge.

And, it's just f****** amazing to me that two movies, "Rebel Without a Cause," and "West Side Story" were responsible for causing the switchblade ban. It just goes to show you how our mushy little brains are manipulated by Hollywood fiction.

The federal law was passed in 1958 but I believe that in California, the switchblade and the balisong (butterfly knife) were banned prior to the fifties. The association with switchblades and balisongs in California were Mexican and Mexican-American youths who were part of the zoot suit movement. Filipino immigrants who were large in the grape growing industry prior to the migrations in the 30's and 40's were known as knife fighters.

As with many California laws, the intent was to stop those dirty minorities from their blood lust. :)

In Arizona they're not illegal per se, but hard to purchase. Granted I know what flea markets to go to get them  Got my little sister one since she ALWAYS wanted one, and 5 years on she still carries it every day :D

I never saw the reasoning behind the ban other than old fashioned fear from the 1950's! I used to carry one all the time when I rode my Stella 150 scooter (essentially a modern custom version of a Vespa PX150) as a daily driver. A knife of any quality and an old motorbike go hand in hand, especially when you snap f'ing clutch cables every two weeks and end up having to dig the remainder out of the sleeve and replace it on the side of the road into work!!!! A flick-knife was alot easier for me to carry in my pocket, and I still did even after I got to working in theater full time and carried a multi-tool. Just became second nature.

A sheathed knife that's shoulder-mounted is a lot better than a switchblade... I'm pretty sure you don't want to be fiddling with a button when you're travelling downwards over 120mph with a tangled chute.....

Remember, everything is more dangerous when it's an automatic.

Automatic-
Guns: OMG people can shoot much faster! And if it becomes MORE AUTOMATIC, the gun'll shoot people ALL BY ITSELF!

Knives: OMG people can open their knives faster! This means that it makes it easier to stab people...wait...how does that work again?

Cars: OMG people just need to shift the lever once AND THEY CAN MOW DOWN A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE WITHOUT USING A CLUTCH!!1!!1!eleven!!

Antivirus scans: OMG these scans will murderize those poor defenseless viruses.
