30.06 signs to be removed from Houston Zoo

At the behest of the City of Houston which was prompted by a prominent Texas gun rights group, the Houston Zoo has been forced to remove all "no guns" signage from its premises.

Attorney Edwin Walker with Texas Law Shield, a legal services firm for gun owners, sent a demand letter to the Houston Zoo and its corporate entity and the city's parks and recreation department on Sept. 3 asking that they take down all 30.06 (guns prohibited) signs at the zoo.

A 30.06 sign can be used by a business owner to prohibit a CHL holder from bringing a firearm into business. The signs refer to Texas Penal Code 30.06 which forbids CHL holders from bringing firearms into locales with 30.06 signs in plain sight at the entrance or a "conspicuous manner clearly visible to the public."

Now all the murders and impromptu hunting at the Houston Zoo by carriers will end.

The Houston Zoo has reinstalled a series of signs that prohibit the carry of firearms into the gates of the family-friendly attraction almost three months after being forced to take them down at threat of legal action.
“After consultation with legal counsel, the Houston Zoo, Inc. has concluded that Texas government code does not prohibit HZI from lawfully posting signs that ban weapons from its premises because HZI is – at its core – an educational institution,” Wallace wrote Tuesday.

The zoo argues that being an educational institution exempts it from being forced to allow firearms within its gates.
Bonus points for hiding behind children.

Give it time. They'll probably be going back up now that they know they can declare arboretum an educational institution.

Lets see if the zoo remains educational.

The state is pretty particular on that for sure. I wonder who's urging the zoo to continue this silliness.

here in Misery, they just have to have a 14 x 11 sign with 1 inch letters, and if they catch you they can ask you to leave. If you dont, then they can call the cops. But I dont think its a crime to carry where its Posted not to. . Unless its under the heading of Govt, School, church, etc..
This is just my opinion, yours may vary and is no less valid.

The issue in Houston revolves around the use of public land. The zoo does not own the property. Just my recollection. I've never carried in the zoo. Their parking lot is large and could have problem areas. I won't leave a handgun in my car there no matter how well hidden or locked.

here in st. louis, where we are facing a law suit by those who want to open carry as well as CCW on the zoo property, is that the zoo is owned and funded by the city tax payers and donations from corporations. The zoo owns the property, is a city entity, and not only has hundreds + of school kids daily visiting there, but educational programs at the zoo. And its one of the few zoos in the US that are still free. I would think not just being a city govt owned and operated venue, but having educational programs and so many kids around, it would just be illegal to carry there, or at the very least, common sense not to carry in the zoo.

yup, we had that too here, and , back when I was a wee tot , there was a giant sliver back gorilla named Phil, who tossed his water bucket at my grampa for smoking a cigar!

Same in my state, save the standardized signs. Signs prohibiting guns don't have the force of law in NH, but one risks getting jammed up on a trespassing charge for failing to leave when asked to do so. This is as it should be.

Of course as with probably anywhere now that gun prohibitionists have won the hearts-and-minds battle there is likely no shortage of hoplophobic SWATting enthusiasts to call the police on those they think might have a gun. When I think of concealment, it is protection from such zealots who would, for their own pleasure, intentionally try to to get others killed by the police I have foremost in mind.
