Gun prohibitionist group put up ~36 billboards in MA

Like other disarmament enthusiast groups, John Rosenthal's
Stop Handgun Violence is fixated on those who possess firearms legally, while claiming to be about reducing "gun violence."
http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/0 ... story.html
Beginning Tuesday, Stop Handgun Violence will be “saturating” highway signs at three-dozen locations across the state, an interim solution until cofounder John Rosenthal finalizes construction of the Fenway Center complex over the turnpike.
The new highway signs being installed this week will read, “We’re Not Anti-Gun. We’re Pro-Life. Massachusetts Gun Laws Save Lives,” and feature a Bushmaster XM-15 assault rifle, with a white surrender flag poking out from the barrel.
It should be no surprise the group's message is mixed:
While Stop Handgun Violence, which pushes to reduce gun deaths without banning firearms,...
Someone should let gun prohibitionists know they have already won in MA.

"We're not Anti-Gun. We're Pro-Life."
Did they focus group that? Do they not realize another group already uses that term? Are they for guns and against woman's reproductive rights?

They're probably trying to be provocative, but being "pro-life" is not exactly an uphill battle in MA either. They really need to take their act to a state in which RKBA already has not been nullified in effect.

Makes sense. The state has not effectively nullified any _people_ to the best of my knowledge.
Rosenthal claims his campaign has resulted in a significant decrease in the number of people killed through the use of firearms. Sounds ridiculous.

Let's see...they aren't anti gun, but they want to ban guns based on aesthetics. They are against violence, but focus on the type of gun that kills the least amount of people. They're named after handguns, but go after rifles.
Makes perfect sense.

How about "we're not anti-gun, we're just pro-Franken-AR"

Oh he's a tool no doubt. And he has money. Another aspirational Bloomberg.

I'd like to see a pro-life group like this focus on something big, like pneumonia. 400,000,000 cases a year resulting in 7% of the deaths that occur worldwide. Over 1 millon people in the US go to the hospital for it each year and it costs over $10 billion a year in healthcare costs.
Seems like a much bigger threat. Cancer is a good standby if that doesn't tickle their fancy.
The neat part is you get to help people without taking away their rights.

If only every state was like Maine and banned billboards entirely.

Yeah but it doesn't come with that visceral, vicarious thrill of screwing people you don't like and can't visualize as anything but a monolithic and cartoonish evil force.

That is a neat idea. I bet it would pass here as a public safety issue

You're onto something. It could play right into the authoritarianism so prevalent in the state, with government deeming billboards a distraction to proles trying to drive to work. The
you-don't-need _and_
for-the-children arguments would both apply.

Yesterday
Stop Handgun Violence unveiled a new billboard. It is apparently in response to one they are losing.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/ ... story.html
“Stop Handgun Violence is not trying to ban guns other than military style assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines — the common denominators in the daily mass shootings,” he said. “What we are trying to do is save lives.”
“But the fact is that we’re just treading water until the nation’s lawmakers tackle this life-and-death issue. Gun laws work,” Conley said. “We’ve proven it here in Massachusetts, and we have to bring that message to Washington. John Rosenthal and Stop Handgun Violence are doing just that.”
The prosecutor was joined by Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Police Commissioner William Evans, and Attorney General Maura Healey to unveil the billboard, according to Stop Handgun Violence.

He was just on WGBH. They didn't take calls.

I don't feel nullified either.
Most anti-gun rhetoric in Massachusetts comes from cities (where violence is overwhelmingly perpetuated with illegal guns) and misguided, naive do-gooders (who choose not to enforce the laws they've already passed).
When you get to the more rural areas, overall sentiment is decidedly pro RKBA.

They've changed from "we're pro-life" to "we're for life". Was the word "pro" not doing well with focus groups?

Wouldn't want any abortion restrictionist confusion.

Unfortunately, as with most states, your laws are statewide. So even person living out in Jerkwater, MA, which has a CoP who might issue LTCs unrestricted and FIDs as one would expect, would have to apply for permission from the state simply to be able to own a long gun (FID). Thus the
R part of RKBA in the US constitution is not recognized by the state. That's de facto nullification regardless of what apologies might be made for the state or what excuses are made pertaining to the right of the state to regulate.
Jerkwater, MA should not be confused with Jerkwater, NH.

Dispo - I do feel my constitutional rights are being infringed upon. They most definitely are.
I have not been nullified. Yet.

Or rather, they don't want anyone noticing how many tactics they've borrowed from the anti-choice movement.

MA laws are a bit over the top and misguided, but I have a MA legal DS Arms FAL, 9mm semi-auto pistol and more. Yep, limited to 10 round mags and keep ammo locked up separate from firearms, but meh, not really much of an inconvenience. Personally, I think MA got some of the laws right - required training and safe storage in particular.
