NRA News Conference

Anyone watch the NRA news conference?

Still digesting, but he made some valid points, however, let's be honest the NRA is not coming from a position of strength right now no matter what they say.

One thing I will say, is I tend to feel even more pro-gun when I see gun owners being attacked as we are right now.

Right, because gun owners are the real victims here.

(Sorry to pick on you with that snark, ProGun. We've probably all experienced that feeling to some extent, and you see it VERY strongly on the right-wing gun sites. But, please, let's try to keep some perspective.)

For F******* every gun owner with your press conference this morning. I expected that at some point you would double down on your BS, but I didn't think you would lead off with it. Instead of saying "we look forward to working will all sides...." You come out to only help prove the case of the gun control crowd, the the NRA and in turn gun owners are irrational tactical response wannabes bent on carrying AR15s into show and tell time at the local kindergarten.

I've spent a week having rational discussion with my non-gun owning friends, and up until now I felt I was making progress on demonstrating rational debate and willingness to find real solutions. However, I fear the NRA speech this morning probably set back my own efforts.

The NRA had a live stream. I'd rather watch it on YouTube later. I've read most of LaPierre's speech and it was on par with his debate with the Australian from the UN.

I'm thinking that he was worried about his paychecks.

Yeah, I don't feel victimized for my views on guns but I do take exception to those who started beating the drums of the AWB over the events of last Friday.

Roosevelt said we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

LaPierre says we need to fear gun-free school zones that advertise to "genuine monsters" as well as violent video games, a lack of prosecution of violent crime, copycats, hurricanes (seriously!), violent movies, the media, gun bans, and the President's budget.

Did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, we need fear we've left our children utterly defenseless and the NRA stands ready to train those fine officers that every school needs to hire now.

Watched it live at the NRA website. He made a few good points near the end about the media's role but for the most part I think it was a total failure. National registry of the mentally ill? Armed volunteers in schools? It was nothing more in my opinion then a rallying cry to their base as usual. Blaming everyone and everything but themselves. And the big plan? More guns in schools and a new program called "The National School Shield". I'm sure they will be more then happy to offer all the training they can...for a fee. There is going to be a backlash like you've never seen over this. Energize the base and keep the controversy going. Good for business. I really had hoped they would come out with something different. Can't wait to see what the fact checkers find on some of his claims.

I'm fucking disgusted and I didn't even watch or listen to it. If I knew I wasn't going to be working sunday I'd watch this puke on Meet the Press. Between this shitbird and my gun club presidents email this morning I'm ready to send both my membership cards to them in box with one of my dogs' excrement. Where the fuck are the sane people anymore?

1) I'm tired of the video game argument. There have been numerous studies now. All same conclusion: no causality whatsoever.
2) The lack of prosecution of violent crime is true. The only exception is if there is a drug offense along with the violent crime. Worse: many states actually routinely lets violent offenders go free early because of jail overcrowding while keeping locked up the guy who got busted with a bag of weed.
3) Copycats do exist and the media is mostly to blame for them
4) Yes hurricanes. Look what happened with Katrina. Looters everywhere and racist scumbags using the lack of police presence to start shooting anyone with brown skin. So yes, hurricanes!
5) Violent movies? See number 1. No causality.
6) Hell yes the media is at fault. Stop ####ing plastering the killers face and name everywhere. Anyone with a shred of ethical integrity would do their best to minimize mention of the killers name and showing his face.
7) I'm not worried so much about gun bans. This is the first time in a long time I'm relieved we have a Republican House. No ban of anything could possibly pass the House. Any Republican passing gun control will get eliminated in the following primary and they know this. What is so stupid of the Democrats is that even getting such a bill to the floor would be suicide for them. 2014 could wind up being 1996 all over again. When will they learn?!

I wonder if the NRA will cover schools' higher liability premiums.

Nothing's free.

Regardless what anyone says or does, the thing is it's really too late to close the barn door. The horses are long gone. We have what...300 million guns out there? You can ban whatever you want. Knock down every door and confiscate as many guns as possible and there will still be MILLIONS out there. I don't care to even imagine the disaster there would be with some sort of gun confiscation program. That would be very ugly.

Are there things that can be done to minimize these tragedies? Sure. Do I believe they can be totally eliminated with gun laws? Nope. Heck, some of the safest states have less restrictive gun laws...think Vermont, New Hampshire. Men have been killing each other since the dawn of time, and that will never change. Gun laws in America are little more than "feel good" measures that do zip to solve our violence problems.
