What a refreshingly well crafted article. So glad you posted it and I dropped in tonight. Frankly the way MSNBC and CNN have gone insane over this issue, I had to get away from the TV for awhile, and wound up here.

 Thank you.

Hey DoctorB, I've noticed you sharing some refreshingly well crafted thoughts of your own.

Please make yourself an introduction thread and tell us a little.

I was reading in the local very pro-gun ban newspaper (which otherwise is usually rabidly conservative) this morning that they're working on revising the Florida "stand your ground law". Some of the changes were common sense - the law doesn't apply if you pursue a fleeing person, or are the one who is aggressive (you can be arrested in those cases and even tried for murder). Others sound like more of the same... they don't like that law and consider it legalizing murder and want it gutted.

I've tried to explain to people that before "Stand Your Ground", the cops were telling us that if someone came into our house and were stealing, that we had to make every effort to leave the premises and could do nothing unless we could prove that they were coming at us with the intent to kill us and we couldn't escape (one even said if we DID shoot someone who was in our house threatening us, to put a weapon in their hand and pray that the DA doesn't decide to get you for murder). The SYG law put finis to that sort of talk really quick (which as I indicate in the next paragraph, I've heard the same said to others).

IT was only in the last couple of years that I learned from a friend (gun-friendly liberal, but she does tend to support a ban on "assault weapons") that there is the "Castle Doctrine" in Florida, and you don't have to abandon your home to crooks and can use lethal force if necessary to protect not only your own life, but that of your family, your home, and your possessions. The "cops" (I'm not very friendly to them - I've been stopped maybe 25 times in 35 years, and 2/3 of them were bogus - and they've made it clear they don't like us calling them, even for really dangerous situations) were lying to us, as usual. I've heard them say the same sort of lies to other people, the main thing being that the people being spoken to were poor working people (like us).

I think that the next time one of my friends starts pushing gun control, I'm just going to email or post that link and ask them to read it. Then I'll remind them why gun control is such a bad idea. (It WAS part of the law at one time - Southeastern Native Americans were stripped of the right to self-defense and you know what happened to us - we didn't regain our rights under law until after 1980!)

No twitter for me either- whole platform annoys me to be honest. Facebook I get, I must be too old for twitter.
