all kinds of stuff on the news...multiple shooters, single shooter, shooter dead, shooter a teenager using an "AR-17" fully automatic assault rifle and a hockey mask, lots of dead, not lots of dead...

this is really fucking depressing.

Old Oregon State guy here too. Grew up in Portland. Once was Benny Beaver for OSU...but haven't been back to Oregon since 1968. Still drying out.

My hope is that someone armed took out the shooter since there were only two dead and one critical in such a crowded venue. Had to be a nut case. News said he was hollaring, "I'm the shooter!" over and over again.

We'll see how it shakes out.

The police haven't released the kind of weapon used. I can hardly believe it was a fully auto AR simply because there weren't so many wounded or killed. Not to wish any further harm than was done but consider this, once the screaming and running is done and the police shows up -even wearing body armor- to shoot oneself out of fear that the police can fire back is truly, truly pathetic...

The county sheriff's office just concluded a press conference:

The shooting was apparently random, the rifle was an AR-15 stolen that morning from someone known to the shooter, they believe it jammed but the jam was cleared, the shooter apparently shot himself. They aren't confirming the forewarning on 4chan yet...

One of the questions asked by the media was for an accurate description of the "military" rifle used. The sheriff's deputy immediately and quite emphatically responded with (paraphrasing here): We do not consider this to be a "military" rifle, it was an AR-15 semi automatic rifle. When asked again, this time about it being a high powered rifle the response was: It was an AR-15 semi automatic rifle.

Yeah... anyone who considers a .223/5.56 "high-powered" is a complete and utter moron.

Again, I can't believe I'm about to say this, but props to police for not calling it an "assault" or "military" rifle... since it's not.

And I also heard it was stolen, which kills any kind of anti-gun bullshit argument.

Also, not to be callous, but how the fuck do you have an AR and only kill 2 and wound 1? Inexperience, incompetence, and lack of proficiency?

I am afraid that just because the rifle was stolen it will not silence the anti-gun crowd. They will say that that gun like that should be totally outlawed so no one could steal one. I wonder if he had a history of sever mental health issues ( I know he had to be way over the line to do what he did , I mean contact with the mental health system). Also, as the weapon was sto;en was it reported to the police and was his identity as the thief known.

Yep. Or if that fails, they'll push for laws making the legitimate owners of guns that have been stolen responsible for criminal actions perpetrated with those guns.

This does not answer everything, but:

Roberts had no known criminal history, authorities said, although the AR-15 used in the shooting recently had been stolen from someone Roberts knew. The theft had been reported on Tuesday, hours before the attack.
I recall reading that the gun had been stolen in the morning on the same day the shooting occurred but I may have misread or may be misremembering.
