Marines ban PMAGs

Polymer rifle magazines, preferred by many combat troops for their durability, have been banned by the Marine Corps, according to a new administrative message published Monday.

Effective immediately, only standard-issue 5.56mm metal magazines are approved, according to the message, signed by Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, the Marine Corps’ deputy commandant for combat development and integration. They have a 30-round capacity with either tan, green or black followers, the internal plate that pushes rounds into a rifle’s chamber.

Marine officials began ad hoc bans on polymer magazines last year, citing concerns over their lack of compatibility with select weapons. The new message from Mills, who doubles as the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command, makes the ban official across the force.

So, my Dad the retired muhween LTC bought a AR-15 a couple of months after I got one, and after using some of my PMAGs fell in love with them over the old GI mags that he had accumulated over 20+ years in the Corps. Having used a GI Mag and a PMAG(both Magpul and Troy), I really, really prefer the PMAGs. I can get all 30 rounds in them and to feed correctly, where GI mags seem to stop at 28, don't seem to be textured right, etc. The over all "feel" of PMAGs is superior to GI mags.

I bet there are going to be a lot of pissed Jarheads over this.

What I remember hearing from a friend in the Corps (read that as: take this with a grain of salt) is that there was a ban on first and second generation PMAGs because they won't fit and function in the M27 IAR (based on the HK416,) being that it has a square-bottom magazine well. Nevermind that the EMAG and third-gen PMAG will work in the M27 just fine. It sounds like they took this idea and ran with it. Screaming, over the edge of a cliff.
