There's your answer to the question about night sight usefulness.
If you can't correctly and fully identify a target in the dark, you probably should not shoot, regardless of how clearly those glow in the dark sights align to a shadow.
A laser isn't much better.

If you are worried about night intruders in your house, you should get some remote controlled outlets, plug in some lamps, and strategically place "light everything" buttons in several locations. That way if there is a suspicious noise, you can get basic lights going everywhere right away.

isn't one of the cardinal rules something to the effect of being certain of your target...and what's behind it. I think that the subject line could stand changing "accidentally" to "negligently" and nothing would be lost in the translation.
