Okay, this one is just sad.
Albert Peterson shot dead his wife and two sons hours after going to church because he dreaded the thought of Obama winning the election, a family friend has revealed.

A confidante of the family for the past 25 years has spoken to MailOnline about the strength and grace of the Peterson family, as well as the torment that plagued Albert which drove him to shoot dead his wife Kathleen and his two sons Christopher and Mathew at their suburban home in DC on Sunday.

A history of mental illness, the loss of a dear uncle, and a growing fear of Obama winning a second term in the White House took its toll on the mind of Mr Peterson, a wealthy defense contractor, the friend said.

'He just did not want his kids inheriting this mess,' Maggie L, who did not wish to reveal her last name, told MailOnline. 'Sometimes we thought he might take his own life when he was so depressed. We never thought he would take Kathie's.'

Anyone who kills their family must think of them as property.

Is this a problem. Better than shooting up a liberal place of worship.

No surprise that a family destroyer was a defense contractor.

It is very sad.

I can't condone suicide but I can understand why some people do commit suicide. I can't understand taking the ones you love with you. If they (family) want to go the method is there for them to use.

The craziness will only increase as the election comes nearer, specially once the right realizes that it is on track to lose. I have bumper sticker supporting Obama on my car, and it feels like a foolish risk, both for me and my car. My Obama yard sign has not been destroyed yet... but I expect it to any day now.
I have an Obama T-Shirt that I'm actually afraid to wear.
It is a sad state of the country.

The profile says Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. Yeah... that sounds about right.

The country is polarizing in politics, but that simply plays on our tribal tendencies. However, it is being amped up to tribal warfare for no particular reason other than it wins elections.

People who are able should view the enemy not as other people but the idea that one should seek to consolidate wealth and power in a weak economy for their "survival". The majority of those who believe this are reactionary in nature and merely ignorant.

In Tibetan Buddhism, Evil is simply defined as ignorance. It may still trip you up, and make you angry when people commit evil acts, but holding that view prevents yourself from proliferating the same ignorance in your community. When you see that fundamentally we are interdependent and hard-wired to help each other, you also don't fear as much for the self-perceived little self/world to do what this poor sod in the news story did.

This may sound callous but, good riddance. I'm sure his brain was filled with FOX and Limbaugh all day and that led to his ultimate demise, stupidty.

EDIT: I have a security clearance thru my work, maybe no where near a level this guy has as a defense contractor but, mine is renewed every year. How did this guys mental issues escape the background checks? I'm guessing he wasn't on any kind of meds for his paranoia?

I think the posters on this thread should think once before posting. I am not *happy* for the loss of any life. Especially not the loss of life that seems entirely preventable and completely unwarranted.

I don't think we should be celebrating this man's death. And definitely not the death of his family. While it might me 1 to 2 less votes for the Republican party, it means 1 to 4 less people in the world. Just my 2c

In spades.

That's a sad thing. I hate he had to take his family with him regardless of his politics.

Into the penalty box you go.

He was wealthy and probably seeing a doctor for his depression, my uneducated guess is that his brain was riddled with zoloft or paxil. Put another notch on the pharmaceutical industries six shooter.

Delusions and paranoia often have a single focus so you can't spot somebody with either until you hit on that specific topic. And no, Whitey, I'm not talking about you. ;)

I didn't realize how sensitive everyone is about this topic. You sure don't mind throwing out Darwin awards to other dumb asses, not sure why this guy gets a pass. Pretty clear from what his friend discussed to the reporter that this guy was a ticking time bomb and nobody stepped in to defuse it.

I think folks are sensitive because of the political animosity.

We hear people like this guy come close to calling for the deaths of liberals all the time. We want to think of ourselves as better than that.

My opinion: stupid is as stupid does.

He killed his family. I guess, technically, that qualifies him for a Darwin award but this wasn't due to some dumb-ass, "Hey, everybody! Watch this!" mistake.

While I'm sad to see anyone take their own life, it makes me furious when they take others with them.

The family was innocent victims in this.

^ this ^

Also I don't necessarily call this a stupid act - aka worthy of a Darwin Award (like shooting of your penis in the other thread).

The family is the part that bothers me and the fact that it appears to be a "politically charged" killing of family and self.

My callous disregard of life is not Christian and I should feel remorse and apologize.
My difficulty is in the constant insult that I have had to suffer from the mouths of these people. I have even had it implied to me that the righteous right should put their feet on my neck. These people make it hard on the individual to remain decent in the face of adversity.

Personally, I feel politics is irrelevant to this story. I question the validity and journalistic integrity of the linked news source. Actually, this strikes me as plain unethical.

This was a mentally ill man, obviously in the grip of depression and paranoia. Who gives a shit if he did it because of Obama or the pink fairy conspiracy.
