"Goes off?" Well, actually, not until a Phila PD officer pulled the trigger.

Careful with that booger finger, Eugene.
Another article I saw had it that the gun is a S&W Airweight.

Oy. That ups the ante of fail. Assuming it's stock, we're talking 10+ lbs of negligent trigger pressure.

"According to officials, at 6:33 a.m. today, the flight attendant entered a Terminal C security checkpoint lane with a loaded .38 caliber Smith and Wesson Airweight revolver in her purse."

Maybe he thought it was a SAA and was trying to put it on half-cock and slipped...
I bet his carry gun is a semi-auto and he doesn't have much revolver experience - in which case he should have just left it alone.

"....the officer who accidentally discharged the gun will go back to training on handling weapons."
I should think so. That's pretty sad really. One would think that to be a LEO you'd have to be very familiar with all sorts of weapons. Sadly far from the truth through. That would be utilizing logic and we can't have that now can we?

How can he not know how to unload a revolver? When I was taking my CCP class the instructor made sure everyone there could safely load and unload both a semi-auto and a DA/SA revolver. I brought a Blackhawk to qualify with. He didn't go hands on with the blackhawk but he showed everyone how a SA operates. How could a police officer not know how to unload a DA?

"Let's see.... how do I test whether this is the real deal or a non-functional replica.... oh, I remember."
BAM!
"Real enough..."

You had a better class.
My CCW instructor was an idiot.
They spent an hour explaining why a round fired straight up couldn't hurt anyone.
He had people completely new to firearms shooting rapid fire while backing up next to one another. Fortunately the students were adults and pretty careful.
Now you don't need a permit or safety instruction. There are lots of people around here with Taurus Judges in their pocket. "Ever shoot it? "Don't need to. One of these .410's and they're mincemeat"
Plus all the .380's.

I'm beginning to think I need body armor to go to Safeway.

One phrase - "Training costs time and money." Some cops are interested in guns, but many really aren't. If you're willing to pony up the tax money, I'm sure your local PD/SO will sincerely appreciate it.
Some cops (often hams) are fascinated with their portable radios, but most really aren't. A few physicians can field strip any ol' EKG machine you put in front of them, but by far and away most just use the damn thing. Almost anyone in any job these days uses a computer, but only a few can actually open them up and fix them.
But, yeah, this guy was a dip-shit for not putting it down and asking if anyone else on his squad knew how to clear it.

It always comes down to money. Capitalism is one of the two major banes of humanity and must be destroyed before we'll ever evolve much further.
You do make good points about the level of personal interest. I guess it is illogical to expect ever cop to be a gun nut such as ourselves here. Still would be nice to at least possess a basic competence of them though.

Trust me on this, you don't want cops who are focused on guns first and foremost. While competency with firearms is important, it's 'way down on a long list of other skills that one needs to be a decent LEO.

True to an extent. I've had to explain to a cop (who had a semiautomatic on his hip) how to clear my DAO semiautomatic.
Most of the anti gun people I've known will assert that only cops are well trained and knowledgeable enough about guns to own them, let alone carry.

That's disturbing.

You think any of the anti-gun folks would believe and consider the full ramifications of this? I seriously doubt it.
