VERONA — Earl Jones had just turned off his new TV shortly after 2 a.m. Monday when he heard a bang in the basement.

The 92-year-old Boone County farmer walked eight paces to get his loaded .22 caliber rifle from behind the bedroom door. He unwrapped a beige cloth and returned to the living room, sitting in a chair with clear view – and shot – of the basement door, waiting with the gun across his lap.

Some 15 minutes later, when he heard footsteps moving closer up the stairs, he raised the rifle to his eye. The intruder kicked open the door. Jones fixed his aim on the center of the man’s chest and fired a single shot. The Boone County Sheriff later announced the death of the intruder, Lloyd (Adam) Maxwell, 24, of Richmond, Ky.

True, and I think he should have gotten on the phone right after he got his gun. But it sounds like he's in the middle of nowhere so the police are probably more that 15 minutes away.

Reading between the lines, he may not get that .22 back. Not calling the law after center-punching someone? I suspect the DA is saying, "Too damn crazy to prosecute."

Any time someone breaks and enters into your home like that, you must assume that they mean to harm you. That old man is 92 years old, no match fist-to-fist for a 24-year-old assailant and definitely not three assailants (the 24-year-old and his two pals). That old man was right to defend himself. How long it takes the police to get to this old man's house is irrelevant. What *is* relevant is that his home, and thus reasonably presumably himself, were under attack, and just like when Sen. Bob Corker's daughter Julia found out three years ago when she was carjacked in Washington DC, "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

This old man was right, and I salute him. Right on, sir!

The only possible issue I have with calling the police would be the potential to alert the intruders. As this may hinder one's ability to effectively protect one's self.

Although, the appropriate course of action after shooting a man should be to call the police, not your neighbor.

Potentially, calling the police on the way to / after you have armed yourself, alerting them to your address and the situation, then letting them know you will not be speaking anymore to protect yourself from being located would be a better strategy. Then they would get caught in the process or at least, the police would be there by the time the incident was over.

I'm pro-firearms, not pro-kill people for being dumb. Protecting one's self / property should include inform law enforcement. In my opinion. Not to the point in which it endangers one's self.

I applaud this man for his service, and can appreciate the fact that he acted within the laws governing him. I cannot condone shooting a man in a semi-vigilante manor (as the story makes it sound). But that might just be those tree hugging liberals trying to take our guns controlling our media. :ras:

Ohfergawdssake....
A) He heard a noise in the basement. You think I call the cops every time I hear a noise?
B) He's 92. Can you really demand that he bellow out some Hollywood BS, "Don't shoot or I'll move!!"
C) He's in Kentucky. Where do you expect to find a jury that'd convict the vic?

That prosecutor would find himself facing some mighty angry voters next time up if he went after this old man.

Nobody's going to get that one without a little context.
"So how's your breakfast this morning?" "It's very good, except for the Kentucky Jelly. I can't seem to get used to the taste," the patient replied. I then asked to see the jelly and the woman produced a foil packet labeled "KY jelly."
