The NSSF is running a program to get firearms safety and some level of protection into the hands of gun owners.

I got a pair of gun locks and the NSSF 'Firearms Responsibility in the Home' pamphlet. $0

The locks are the cable type and each comes with a pair of keys. Won't keep a determined person from removing the lock but should be good enough.

In California we are required to purchase some kind of approved lock with each firearm we purchase. I was fortunate enough to have a local PD that gives those cable locks out for free as well. The Desk Sargent even wrote me a note to give the FFL vouching that I had obtained the lock within 30 days of the firearm purchase from them.

As you said, not the most sophisticated devices, but it will keep a 3 year old from getting into it, that and my ammo is kept in a separate, locked area.

I have no children, and my door is only unlocked as I'm passing through it. Somewhere I have a box of those locks; they just come in the box with new purchases here.

We have a gun safe in the basement for this reason. I have yet to find a satisfactory HD solution though.

The actual gun locks are in a pile in a drawer someplace as they come in the box with all guns, new or used, here.
