The first cop on the scene shot him in the stomach and then the gunman turned his pistol on himself. The cop was shot 8 times and is already up and walking around at the hospital.
DHS and FBI have pikced up tracking these guys slowly since at least the beginning of this year. The DHS training on IED's I was at in the spring was pretty heavy on the source of threats not being all brown skinned muslims. Founded by civil rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr. in 1971, the SPLC is internationally known for tracking and exposing the activities of hate groups.
After that, DHS withdrew that assessment and - at least publicly - cut funding and personnel for tracking homegrown nutsacks. Whether they really did cut it completely or had a skeleton crew keeping the pilot light going, who knows.
