Already the media is showing its confusion. On MSN the shooting was repotedly done with a 9mm hangun, They noted Wisconsin has some of the most permissive gun laws and then went on that since the assualt weapon ban was lifted -----. We don't know the history of the shooter or how he obtained his weapon. The media is confused on weapons (as are most anti-gun people). This is not a good start for a discussion on legislation.
I wished people would mourn the dead help the wounded (physical and mental), try to understand the assialnt, and then discuss ways to prevent it.

Unfortunately we as a society like to fix things before we know what broke and where it broke.
I still don't see a need for more gun restrictions.

Again from MSN the assilant was Wade Michael Page former leader of a neo-nazi music group called End Apathy. Supposedly he bought the pistol ten days prior to the shooting. He served in the Army from April 1992 until October 1998. There is no mentiopn of prior police record. As far as mental health -----leader of a neo-nazi band speaks for itself. I realyy don't know of any firearm stories "close by" but there cpould be.

FWIW, he did get an 'other than honorable' discharge. How did that not stop his NICS? Or is it just a Dishonorable or Section 8 that disqualifies you?

There might be a few more exactly like him out there yet.

Seems like my priority for "protection from" is justified... my death threat source list has supremacists/racists/zealots/wingnuts higher in likelihood than petty common criminals.

Good question, usually other than honorable is given for some serious infraction. A total misfit would end up with a general under honorable conditions. I wonder if he had a police record? Was his purchase a private purchase?

Really number one threat to me on my list is the US government.
This is all the reason I need for any weapon I want. If you want to put restriction on what civilians can own, fine, but give the same restrictions to the military... and police... the line is blurring.

He was one of the Neo Nazis kicked out for 'racial issues' in '98 from Bragg. That makes me feel comfortable that there are more of these asshats out there.

But whatever the reason, it doesn't really matter to those people that were shot. Man, too many shootings lately. Not that *any* shootings are ever good.
Suspect has been described as white male, with a shaved head and a sleeveless shirt. He might have seen a bunch of men with brightly colored turbans walking to a the temple and raged out and decided to kill what he thought were Muslims.
Jesus, that sucks. You may be right then.
Clearly, and unfortunately, you were correct, Zapp.

The number one threat to you is yourself.
That is true for nearly everyone.

Gebdo, the video you posted brings me flash back to 1969 and 70 after I got out of the army. The police tear gassed my dorm and dragged several people out. The cops didn't realize that they were filmed and this was the law students dorm. The shit hit the fan. I was hit with tear gas so often in the demonstrations I thought I was back in training. Downside was how the press played it and conservatives now admit they were over joyed as they saw the great uninformed majority being turned against us. Any violence or threat by the protestors boosted the conservatives. I don't have any answers but I am very aware of the law of unintended consequences.

And that is why there were no visible firearms at an Occupy.

There are pills that make you happy.
There are pills that make you blue.
There are pills to kill your streptococci.
There are pills to cure your cockeye too.
There are folks whose pills have made them healthy.
There are folks whose pills have cured their chills.
But the folks whose pills have made them wealthy
Are the folks who make all those pills.
(There are) Dexedrine and Miltown, to pick you up and let you down.
(happy) Or if you're sufferin', swallow a Bufferin.
[- From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/a/allan-she ... yrics.html -]
(pills) Vitamin C's a pill for folks who shiver.
(sad) And there's a pill for Carter's little liver.
(pills) And if you're sleeping in the hospital, because you're ill,
(pills) Betcha the nurse will wake you up to take a sleeping pill.
There are pills for young folks and for old folks,
Each disease has got its remedy.
But no pill can cure the common cold, folks,
So if you sneeze, please don't sneeze on me.
Achoo!
The lyrics of a song written in the early 60s by Alan Sherman, the pharmaceutical industry has drenched this country with more disgusting drugs since, personally I see a connection with much of the irrational behavior today. Holmes in Colorado was a vicodin abuser and the creep in Arizona was under all kinds of meds through out his life.

Because the restriction on the military and police has not.

The federal paperwork asks if the applicant has been dishonorably discharged, so that is the only prohibitive discharge characterization. The thing is, I'd never met a single person who'd been dishonorably discharged during my time in the service. There were tons of people getting kicked out with OTH and general under honorable conditions discharges, but never bad conduct or dishonorable discharges. You have to commit a serious crime to get one of those. Think murder, armed robbery, raping a civilian (because many intra-service sexual assaults are covered up and the perps are simply administratively separated) etc. Service-members suspected of having affiliations with hate groups/movements should be court-martialed and, if found guilty, dishonorably discharged. They have no business legally owning weapons.
What do you expect when we allow our current political climate to continue? We allow these terrorists to infiltrate our military. It is even politically dangerous for our "liberal" president to declare in direct language that terrorists such as the shooter are enemies of the state to be hunted down and imprisoned. We allow this to happen and we allow the media to paint the terrorist as a "lone gunman".
We allow it to continue, yet when someone blames us for it we explain it away as "not really American" and "the acts of extremists".
