The movie The Dark Knight Rises :
Rush Limbaugh claimed that the character of Bane was included in the film as part of a vast media conspiracy against Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's association with investment firm Bain Capital.
And there are those who treat his word as gospel!

3Off his meds, or back on 'em?

5Bane was named in the comic before the founding of Bain Capital.

10Uh, no. 1993. He was introduced to break Batman's back. This was around the same time that they "killed" Superman.Fukshot wrote:80s. Back when we still thought that the pendulum would swing back.Fractured wrote:Fukshot wrote:Bane was named in the comic before the founding of Bain Capital.
Yeah. Early 90's I believe.
And it turns out Bain Capital was founded in 1984, so not after the introduction of Bane.

12When I quit following Batman, Alfred was still alive and Bob Kane's name was still on the artwork.Fukshot wrote:Hmmm. Old lady blurs it all together. And, FWIW, "Bob Kane" was signed to the artwork long after he no longer drew it.

All of these time-reversed conspiracies, whether you take them seriously at all or not, are just draining from the soul. Obama planted as a secret Muslim to overthrow the world at his birth... Obama causing the mortgage and default swap crisis before his presidency... a comic book character named 20 years ago and put in a movie before Romney was even on the map was just a plot to criticize the future Romney candidate.
I freaking wish the left had the kind of psychic powers all the accusations make. Professor X would save a ton of time and money in campaigns.

The reality is that the characters, including Batman, Bane, and all the others are, in the writer's minds, representative of a set of characteristics and possibly archetypes. The producers and directors get a hold of them and modify them for marketability. The actors put their own stamp on them as Ledger did to the Joker, and then we all sit here and make up stuff about what it means.
That and Limbaugh is just a straight up idiot who has the skills of a street hustler or a carnival barker. He brings in the fools who are looking for someone to blame but would really rather not know about the powerful entities that attempt to influence us and would rather focus their ire at the rest of us who are in the same boat.

17He was killed off in (I believe) Detective Comics issue #328, June 1964 (and later resurrected, of course).wfaulk wrote:To my knowledge, Alfred has never died. The second Robin did.SwampGrouch wrote:When I quit following Batman, Alfred was still alive and Bob Kane's name was still on the artwork.

By that time I'd been exposed to The Mighty Thor and was spending my 12¢/issue on Marvel comics. At the time DC's characters were two-dimensional as hell. Marvel's were far more interesting as personalities, especially to a pre-teen.

18Fair enough. He was "dead" from '64-'66. I didn't remember that at all. Largely because you're right and Batman wasn't really worth reading until the late '60s.
Interestingly, the issue where Alfred "dies" was the second Julie Schwartz issue of Detective. He's widely credited as the force that made DC interesting in the '60s. For that matter, he's widely credited as the instigator of the Silver Age of comics.
