And they'd still live out of their car. Except now, they wouldn't be eligible for any assistance because they have a minuscule revenue stream.
I guess the single mom could just put the kid in the car while she worked...

Its not "all about" personal responsibility. I will grant that that will take you a long way, it's taken me a long way, but I had help, I had levers and springboards. I had student loans, I had a safety net of family, and I had a whole lot of stubborn.
These things are necessary in combination. Flipping burgers at McDonald's is not a safety net.
Re: This makes me sick. It's too sad.
27Working for fast food for an income could at least cover the costs of a cheap place to stay and basic food needs. Local churches are great resources on daycare that will work with low income families.
Perhaps even a second fast food job might tip one over the edge and actually be able to afford a cell phone and an occasional movie.

32My mother would be the classic example of the American pulled my self up by my boots straps story, she was the oldest of 4 children with an immigrant father and a mother who slaved on a family farm. She had average grades in high school but with the help of teachers and mentors and the support of family and friends she managed to get a degree in music education at the U of M at the height of the great depression. The only thing that stood in the way of that title was her resistance to it. She went on to a very successful career in education and volunteer work in her field and was instrumental in getting scholorships for many inner city youth to many different music camps and schools till the day she died. She was honored with a large side bar write up in the Star and Tribune news paper along with her obit when she died in 2005. She always gave the credit to the people she was LUCKY enough to have helping her. One person can just luck out in life but another only gets the shit sandwich, I don't mind my taxes going to help people out because for every welfare cheat there are many more who are just trying to get ahead.

Here is the McDonalds application for a job.
It requires you to have a street address.

Even with unemployment near 10%, if someone wants a job, they can get one, but must do so by accepting less than they are otherwise accustomed to receiving for compensation for their labor. But, they can most certainly find work if they really want to.
Getting a job by lowering your standards is sensible advice sometimes, but 10% unemployment means that when you get the job, you just managed to not be one of the 10%. All you seem to be saying in this post and others is that because you can imagine not being in that 10%, or imagine a way you think would successfully keep you out of it, therefore anyone who is in that 10% is lazy/ stupid/unwilling to sacrifice/deserves it.
When unemployment is 10%, 10% of people will be unemployed. Your ability to keep yourself out of that 10% is not reason to blame that 10% for their lot.

36We are all on the internet.
We are not on welfare.
Some of us have been.
To every person who can afford to be on this forum that says of a homeless person "Just get a job at McDonalds."
Get homeless. Then get that McDonalds job. If you don't have the strength to climb into a dumpster for food, how are you going to flip burgers?

37Not for me there aren't. There aren't enough and I think the idea of assuming that a "mission" is the solution is fucking disgusting. Which "mission" do you mean? Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis? That's great. We can just put every homeless queer kid in the country on a bus to Indianapolis. That's solved the problem completely! How could I have been so stupid? Also, bus tickets are free right?

I started learning computers from Jr. High school forward (nearly 30 years ago). Self taught far more than any public education could attempt to touch. After leaping from job to job, eventually find a few that also pay for classes on various systems.
I have no college or current professional certifications, but am earning just as much as my fellow engineers that do have degrees and certifications.

interesting my 64 year old friend who worked in IT for oh let's say 40 years, 15 of them as a DBA, is UNABLE to find work. why? he didn't job hop but he is is OLD
most diligent employee I ever had
you are lucky. you had the fortune to be near computers at the right time; most schools didn't have computers back then
I worked in IT over 25 years. I wouldn't hire people who went 'leaping from job to job' . why train them if they are just going to leave.
so what is the secret to your success of continued employment?
and why do you assume that because you were hired after unemployment others can be? you at least have some skills. And why were you unemployed?

If you are for supporting the U S Constitution, you should not advocate government as a solution to any of our problems.
There are plenty of compassionate people and organizations that have in history, always taken care of those less fortunate.
