This makes me sick. It's too sad.

So I have a friend who calls herself a liberal.

She sent this crap email.

I guess these measures wouldn't wouldn't apply to White people. Especially the voting part.

Is there such a thing as a Tea Party Liberal? I sent her this article. I think she's a closet racist.
The Sharp, Sudden Decline of America's Middle Class
They had good, stable jobs - until the recession hit. Now they're living out of their cars in parking lots.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Despite a continuous, two-year job search, she remains without dependable work. She says she doesn't need to eat much – if she gets a decent hot meal in the morning, she can get by for the rest of the day on a piece of fruit or bulk-purchased almonds – but food stamps supply only a fraction of her nutritional needs, so foraging opportunities are welcome.

Prior to the Great Recession, Adkins owned and ran a successful plant nursery in Moab, Utah. At its peak, it was grossing $300,000 a year. She had never before been unemployed – she'd worked for 40 years, through three major recessions. During her first year of unemployment, in 2010, she wrote three or four cover letters a day, five days a week.
Having maxed out her borrowing capacity, though, she is increasingly unable to pay what she owes to places like the YMCA, where she goes to shower. She wouldn't be adverse to dumpsterdiving – "I hear there's good food" – but she's not strong enough to climb the sides.

This kind of stuff has been around for years.

I was once a welfare child, for several years in fact (thanks mom and dad for all your sacrifices). But now am a grown, independent, voting, jury bound, taxpaying person. That's right voting and taxpaying, and by taxpaying I mean gladly payiing it forward. Thank you Peoples of the United States of America.

Here's the difference between Republicans and everyone else:

When they hear that for every job opening, there are 6 applicants, a Republican figures that if you're unemployed, you must not have applied for 6 jobs yet.

Everyone else realizes that 5 out of 6 people will never find a job until things change.

Actually, from a cost/benefit outlook the drug testing is a nonstarter. Costs of the negative results and no conclusive retests kill any savings that denying a positive result would provide.

You've apparently never lived in a food desert. A large percentage of poor people do.

I know I do. Our food quality drops when our car breaks down and the only shops we can get to are on the bus route. A community org that we volunteer with is starting to teach folks square foot gardening and give them copies of the planting guides for our area. It has made a huge difference in some folks' lives just over the last six months.

I didn't know what Fukshot meant by food desert Erik but what you said helped me understand it a bit.the sq ft gardening is a great idea and it's great to see people solving the problem themselves.the really shitty side to all the walmarts and costcos and stores of that sort is that the mom and pop neighborhood stores are gone so I guess that what is meant by a food desert,

If you were to go to South Central LA back in the Rodney King days, you would see nice looking homes. The homes had backyards and many had garages. What was missing was supermarkets and cars. What was plentiful was liquor stores. A food desert. Doctor desert too. Dentists? Hah!

It's not right to call it a ghetto but there was plenty of hopelessness there. No Job. No car. No good food. The feeling of no one cares.

So it was a food desert. Junk food and liquor. Crack and Smack were still plentiful.

It is part of the WTF of the riots.

It probably still is that way.

I hope your thanks to your parents was sarcasm, as if they sacrificed, you wouldn't have ever experienced welfare.

Not quite, I believe it is somewhere in the middle.

Even with unemployment near 10%, if someone wants a job, they can get one, but must do so by accepting less than they are otherwise accustomed to receiving for compensation for their labor. But, they can most certainly find work if they really want to.

Maybe it was sarcasm. but the second part -
as if they sacrificed, you wouldn't have ever experienced welfare
is quite an assumption. One I'm not going to make. I don't have a clue what his parents sacrificed. I'll ask him when he comes to visit.

You may be right, but I ask you, have you ever gotten food stamps? help with en electric bill? Are you a social worker?

Are you a white male?

Please read the rolling stone article I referenced in my original post.

People can sacrifice and still end up on welfare. And BTW welfare sucks.

There but for fortune goes you or I.

From what I got is she spent too much time volunteering when she needed to get her butt to McDonald's and flip burgers for a living.

Its not that simple, are you advocating that some people are only fit to flip burgers? Once you start there you will not have much of a chance to do anything else like get an education and raise your children, especially if you happen to be a single mother. Flipping burgers and doing paper routes should be jobs for students and teenagers.

It's where I started. Why can't someone reset their lives and build up again? With any previous work experience, the move upward would be easier than starting from scratch.

Just because someone may be a single mother does not entitle them to a better paying job than a student with a paper route or burger flipping job.
On most occasions, the only way to move forward is by hard work and sacrifice. It is all on what the individual is willing to do for themselves.
