acquired a new machine... after thinking about it for a couple of years, my dinosaur of a mac g4 died, leaving me no option. (see fun with fedex thread for that end of the transaction)...
the lowest end mac pro available. because all of my music and imaging is mac based, in case that becomes a red flag...
i fucked myself. none of my internals are compatible, none of my programing is supported, i don't know how drive the fucker...
shit. i know...i know...should of bought a dell.

used to be...i started with a blue and white a long time ago, graduated to the g4 and cannibalized the blue and white's drives to complete the g4...applications and systems were completely interchangeable...
according to apple, the 10.4 operating system is incompatible with the new 10.7 system...can't import anything between them...however....and this is good...
anything windows is easily compatible with the newer mac operating system...
bastards.

No offense or anything. I'm typing this on a G4 powerbook 17. Did you really expect that there'd not be compatibility issues? Not to mention OS changes, you went from an IBM power PC chip to an Intel. Give it some time, you'll figure it out. The MacPro is an awesome, awesome computer.

I know i mentioned return but you should be able to dig it.
If it's a matter of not running older programs then you will adapt.
I've never used a Mac. For me there would be some frustration until I adapted. I have an iPad, and I don't like being treated like I'm a fangirl or ignorant of computers by the snobs at the Apple company. That's the only thing keeping me from buying a Mac plus the fact that it costs me about $1200 more for a mack that has the same speed and ram as my Alienware m11x.
I don't know anyone who does music or video editing that would want to use anything but a Mac.
So maybe before one of our laptops dies we'll go spend the extra money and get one so we can "get it"
Lot's of people use both. Why not?
Anyway you would have to buy all the software that already comes with the mac.

No, honestly I did not expect any compatibility issues between versions of OSX. Having been through the growth from OS 8.0 thru 10, never an in issue. Transitioning into 10.0 from 9.8 was seamless, and each subsequent upgrade has been the same...
I guess I just assumed that my versions of imaging and recording software would function...I was wrong.
The introduction of Intel into the mix is no doubt the root of the issue...I get that, but never the less I find it infuriating
I am stuck with Mac. All of my interaction with studios and publishers is Mac based...
I like your thinking G's...but Apple did away with the satisfied customer thing a long long time ago.

An Upadate to my update...
I am well and truly fucked...
New Macs are not compatible with older peripherals ... Apple has not just discontinued Rosetta, their code that permitted older stuff to talk to newer stuff, they have apparently written code to disable it into their new OS that they call Lion...
and their architecture will not permit downgrading to the older OS...
to anyone thinking of buying a new mac...best think about buying a new printer and whatever else you use too...because there is a good chance that it ain't gonna work.

That is why I back everything I have to a Ubuntu server at home. As long as we can get to the box, we can get to our important files.
Rolandson, that truely does suck. Is it possible to create a virtual OSX box with the right version on it?

I am a complete pc idiot, other than a few things here and there I can't do a thing but at least my HP pavillion has been reliable, have had it since 2005 with no issues at all except 1 which was caused by a power failure while I was doing a file clean,it's been goofy ever since but it's not the pc's fault,I would like to upgrade to a laptop in the near future but not sure what model I want.
