Gallery of Guns

I was wondering how many members here are familiar with Davidson's Gallery of Guns? I have purchased two guns through them. They run weekly specials and I get regular email alerts of guns they are featuring. When you buy through Gallery of Guns they take a down payment via credit card and then ship the gun to your local gun shop. There is no fee for the transfer. Their prices are very good also.

The Ruger Manufacturing site links to them.
They will also show which local gun shops will sell at the lowest price.

If you can find a low cost FFL dealer in your area, then there are much better options than Gallery of Guns.
When buying from Gallery of Guns, you are essentially buying from a 'local' dealer, so you pay tax. Plus you pay shipping. Plus you pay the local dealer markup. Plus you pay the Gallery of Guns profit margin. It is a little like buying beauty products from Avon... you are just adding a local middleman to the purchase price, and you still do all the work.

The website is great from getting an idea of how much things should cost locally, and as a browsing tool. It also gives you a pretty good idea of availability. But the prices are much better elsewhere, even locally.

I think you have this exactly right.

Your local retailer would also prefer to buy through his/her normal wholesaler channel and sell directly to you, rather than split the profit with an extra middleman.

So, yes, use GoG for checking availability and price comparison, and maybe to order some hard-to-find item you can't find locally.

But all things being close to equal, I'd give the local retailers a chance to buy through their channels and sell to me at a fair price.

I've bought several guns through them, including the PT-25 I'm going to pick up in a few minutes!

I've never had a problem with them. Plus they cover the gun with a lifetime warranty when you buy through them. I'm OK with Davidson's.

My semi-local GS, listed on GoG as the closest of their dealers to me, says explicitly on their web site that GoG is full retail and that if you come in to order they can do better on the price.

GoG does have some pretty good sales from time to time. That's when I buy. The little PT-25 was $100 off the MSRP when I bought it.

Good to know. Thanks for the clarification.

My range supplies some of their sales thru them on a distributor/wholesale basis...I pay cost plus 5%. Generally it prices out to be about $100 less than what is available locally and I have never found a better price on the web.

But they don't carry SIGs, which sucks. Means that the range has to do more work when I am in a spending mood...

They are blowing smoke about the full retail part.

They list the local shops and what the shop will sell them for. At least it tells you the gushops with the best general prices in your area.

I just did a search for a 10/22 in my area.

Here are the results.

We have a friend who was a typical liberal hippie type. Didn't like guns.
Now she works at SIG and gets guns half off. She offered her discount but we don't want any.

She still doesn't shoot.

I just did a quick comparison on a 'generic' handgun (the details don't matter):

Cheap to expensive order.

Buds: $394 shipped. Need to add FFL fee ($10-$25)
Academy Sports: $440 out the door.
Gallery of Guns: $470 out the door.
Gun Show: $450 - $500 (Just guessing based on experience)
LGS: Local gun store $500 (Just guessing based on experience)

Differences:
Academy, LGS and Gun Show: You can actually handle the gun and choose if they have several copies.
GoG and Buds: They send it. You don't like it, I don't know who pays or what happens to ship it back.

So if you are going mail order, GoG comes a far second to Buds, like $ 45 - $60 worth on a $400 gun.

I suppose whether GOG is a good way to buy or not depends on the shops in your local area. When I bought my Remington 1911 through GoG their price was lower than all the shops I check with in my area. I didn't pay any shipping cost or transfer fee. I was happy with the price and the service. GOG sent the gun to my local shop within 24hrs after I placed the order. The shop called me to let me know that the gun was there and I simply paid the remainder of the sale price minus the deposit I had put down.

GoG is good for getting notification when a particular gun is back in the market. Then go to Buds, or another good one is Grabagun.com - they have pretty good prices generally, with $6 flat rate shipping. CheaperThan Dirt also has good deals on guns from time to time, but they don't stock them, they source them from others.

GoG prices are significantly higher than other web dealers and even some of the LGS around here.
