Hmmmm... Interesting. Honestly, I don't remember that date ever being mentioned as I grew up. It was always July 4th, when Communist Party of Yugoslavia declared they are organizing armed uprising against fascists. Then it follwed with July 7, uprising in Serbia, July 13 in Montenegro, 22nd in Slovenija and 27th in Croatia and Bosnia. It is possible that what happened on June 22nd in Croatia was ignored by Serbian majority in post WWII Yugoslavia until Croats got their independence and changed it to this date.
Lol, I can completely understand someone doing that, his birthday is after all associated with other things.JoelB wrote:I think our governor has declared Hitler's birthday a state holiday.
I don't follow politics in present-day Croatia, but I find it encouraging that they are choosing to celebrate their anti-Fascist resistance, rather than their Ustashi/Fascist ancestry.DukeNukemIncarnate wrote:Hmmmm... Incidently, June 22nd is the begining of Operation Barbarossa, Axis Powers attack on CCCP.
Me neither. Croats were always disgustingly nationalistic, but at the same time old-time partisans and communists were tough but too. In this link there's no mention of communist organizing it and I can pretty well imagine that despite overall Fascist element in the country back then, some non-fascist yet non-communist groups could form the resistance.larrymod wrote:I don't follow politics in present-day Croatia, but I find it encouraging that they are choosing to celebrate their anti-Fascist resistance, rather than their Ustashi/Fascist ancestry.DukeNukemIncarnate wrote:Hmmmm... Croatia's stance in WWII was similar to Italy's. Yes, there was a significant anti-fascist partizan movement (primarily Communists), but the government -- presumably representing the majority of the people, at least at one time -- was Fascist.
Duke, do you have the understanding there was an independent/nationalist Croatian anti-Fascist force separate from the combined Yugoslav anti-Fascist partisan force under Tito? That's the suggestion I'm getting from the linked article, but I've never heard of such a thing.
The Fourth of July was anti-Nazi Independence Day in Yugoslavia? Awesome. I now have to get twice as drunk in a couple weeks.DukeNukemIncarnate wrote:Hmmmm... Interesting.
