In a terse statement issued after an emergency security meeting summoned by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish government said that a missing F-4 fighter jet had been brought down by Syria. The statement said Turkey “will make its final position known once the evidence is fully uncovered and will determinedly take necessary steps.”

probably Israel and Nato using the Turks to test out the Russian made Syrian air defense, dont want to waste a multimillion dollar F-16 and F-18. And mind you, this is just old tech, granted its an old plane, but I dont think the Russians gave Syria the new S-400 AA, but I'm sure they will, if we keep fucking aroundin Syria, and supporting the rebels. This has the potential to turn into Vietnam

The Turkish - Syrian relationship has been strained lately. Turkey has Syrian refugees from the civil war and Syrian military are reported to be shooting across the border at rebels. Turkey has called for the Assads to go. The Turkish President admits that the fighter jet may have strayed over Syrian territory and normally one nation would scramble jets to escort the offending plane out of their air space. Did a rogue Syrian commander decide to shoot down the Turkish fighter or did Damascus give the order ? Yes it's turning into a proxy war for Russia and Iran, the main backers of Assad versus Sunni nations and Europe.

I wondered about that...
I'm not sure about your Israel/NATO test theory, but why the hell would they be flying an F-4? Doesn't Turkey have much more modern fighters?

Egypt, Germany, Greece, Iran, Japan, South Korea, and Turkey still use them. Japan is looking for a replacement and South Korea is in the process of replacing them with the Korean-designed variant of the F-15E.

So could it be that they were trainees or relatively new pilots since they weren't flying in Turkey's more "elite" fighters? From what I've read, Turkey officials have said that it just happens when jets are flying at high speeds (regarding invading sovereign airspace). That sounds like bullshit to me, considering how sophisticated flight GPS and other instruments are.

They (Turkey) have F-16's and are part of the F-35 program. You're probably right.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm just asking questions. I have no military experience whatsoever. It just seems strange that a fighter (even an old F-4) would accidentally stray into sovereign airspace even if it were going mach 2.

There was a NYT article the other day about the Russian arms to Syria stating that Russia did not give Syria AA capable of defending against the US, but rather their older outdated weapons that are ineffective against a super-power. --in other words the arms sale was symbolic of their alliance, but Russia is not willing to throw muscle against the US.
The F4 has been around for around 50 years..nothing really to brag about.
