Rude awakening

I know the government can do some really dumb things, after all i was in the Corps. I knew that the laws of the land were so convoluted that even lawyers cannot really understand them. But I had never seen such a collection of gobbledegook as almost anything on legal firearms! I would cut and paste but it would possibly overwhelm this forum, lol.

ALL I wanted to do was read up on what makes or does not make my AK47 legal or illegal? All I wanted was to find something that said"pull trigger it shoots once" and the piece is legal. 922r is some of the funniest wrting I have read since Art Buchwald died. More than 16 inches, I wish, less than 16 inches, over 30 inches or 36 inches or has certain safety features or not if it does thus and so...... There is a list of 20 parts of which 10 can or can't be US made or imported or hand made or found inside a meteor.

I took the barrel nut off my AK47, measured the barrel(16inches plus a little), added a USA made suppressor, did not pin or weld it, and damn I cannot be absolutely sure i will not bring the wrath of the ATF down on me! Damn, this isn't a 2A issue it's a stupidity issue. And then there were all the various gun laws passed and allowed to expire or be renewed or amended or this or that! Pre-ban, post ban, still banned, might be banned and then there are the fifty states(well 49 if we leave mama grizzly's back porch out of it) and their contributions.

Sorry for the rant but i got cross eyed last night just trying to read all this and i know less now than i did when i started.

Now back to reading to see if that extra lug holding a small case i was going to weld on the trigger guard to carry my meds is legal.

922r isn't voodoo, it's just a pain in the ass. Here's a fill in the part calculator to help:

Fyi, way the ATF measures barrel length, is: with bolt closed, insert dowel into barrel, all the way to the bolt face.. Mark where the barrel ends on the dowel. Measure dowel from tip to mark.

Also, OAL is measured with any collapsible or folding stock fully extended!

The barrel measurement is helpful but the rest still leaves me a bit confused?

My bolt/carrier does not say made in anywhere. It says VX2773 on the two pieces(hope i have identified the pieces correctly. The dust cover says RA5479 but again does not say where it is made. I am disassembling my AK(field strippinjg)for curiosity. The trigger says TAPCO USA and the muzzle brake says TAPCO USA. None of the furniture has any numbers or notes saying where they were made. The gas tube says 8-A73882 and 2773 under that . So when going down the list I am hard pressed to see how I can add up the correctly made parts? That the dealer would have sold me an illegal weapon I seriously doubt as they are long term dealers and have a decent rep.

As to the confusing information on firearms, I meant the various Acts, their sunsetting, or maybe sunsetting, their ammendments, their being superceded, the definition of assault versus sporting, length of barrel(for some 18" for others 16") Yes a PITA verily(love that word)but also confusing to me at least.

But I am here to learn and learn i will do.

My thanks guys

paul

On the federal level anyway, 18" is for shotguns, and 16" is for rifles. That was established back in 1934,with the NFA.

Its not That complicated, as far as your Wasr you have to have at least 6 US made parts, the barrel cannot be less than 16", unless you have a permanently attached muzzle brake(welded or something, not threaded) You can own and buy short barreled rifles of any length, BUT you cannot put stock on it. Google "Romanian Draco", or an AR15 pistol. Now, You can bypass all that shit if you fill out the necessary paperwork and get a class 3 firearms, pay a $200 tax stamp, wait 4 months, get approved, then you can have any barrel, stock or fully auto.
