actually my high school history class taught the steel strike. Nothing on the battle of blair mountain though.

Actually, my 5th grade daughter did an extended social studies unit this spring on mining, including a field trip and learning about child labor, unions, and the Molly Maguires.

That's heartening. Did the teacher provide any context? I mean, was there any lesson on the broader history of labor in the US?

I went to elementary and high school a very long time ago and we learned nothing about labor history, not even broad outlines. The nephew I am closest to, who is 32 years old now, was taught nothing about it. Perhaps things are getting better?

Not really. It seems to depend on the school and its administrators.

...and the weekend and workdays shorter than 16 hours and the idea that ordinary people are entitled to not starve when they are too old and frail to work and...
