NICS ruins my day...

So I got word from my FFL dealer today that my new handgun was in so I rushed to his place excited as school girl. I was picking up an M&P9 Pro Series, which took me a while to find one in stock and it was a damn good deal too. Filled out the paperwork and was ready to grab the thing and run out the door when my FFL dealer told me that my review had been put on hold and I would be unable to pick up the gun until the 19th! Now they may call as early as tomorrow and let me know that I can pick it up buy it may be another week. Anyone else ever have this happen to them? I was told it is a random thing. It is really frustrating, and frankly makes me want to go all bubba and rant about big government.

They, your gunshop, actually told you that it was the ATF?

I understand that delays with the NICS are relatively common, but if you have run afoul of the ATF...I don't know you

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Man, it sucks that you got transported somewhere that has a waiting period. ;)

I'm sure they'll call back when it's least convenient to you that the hold was lifted. That seems to be the way that works.

They used to hold my guns for a couple days when I first started buying, that was for every purchase I made. Then a couple of years ago I got my citizenship, and my US Passport soon thereafter, after which the one purchase I've made went pretty smoothly, and they gave me my SKS right away.

Which was funny, 'cause I was expecting to be delayed, the guys at the store were kind enough to hold it for me for a couple of hours so that I could get a ride to pick it up.

Just my experience, don't know for a fact if having a valid US Passport would speed things up for anyone. I do know the State Dept. runs your name through a list before you're allowed to get one. The end.

Haha, no he never said anything about the ATF, I just assumed. I am clearly pretty ignorant about this process though.

Same thing happened to me about 5 years ago when I made my first gun purchase since the 1980's. I've bought twp guns since and those have gone through right away. Don't worry, be happy you live in a country where they let you readily buy guns.

Happened to me when I was buying my Ak, of the internet thru an FFL dealer. They called me Saturday, and like you, I was all excited, went to pick it up, filled out some paperwork, then they called the background check thing, waited about 5 minutes, guy comes back, and says: " They said you gonna have to wait till Monday", I said: "What for?" and he just shrugged his shoulders. Anyway, came back Monday and paid $25 and picked it up. Oh, while I was doing all that, the FFL guy insinuated that I was an illegal Mexican who got his ID at a Flea Market.(even though I was born in Europe, and if anything sound more like a Russian, or a Chech, I dont know why the hell he thought I was Mexican. But as with all rednecks in my experience, there are only two countries in this world, US vs. Russia, everything else is either part of US, or it needs to be nuked). I was so pissed off, I was grinding my teeth, but I didnt want to do anything cause there was a off duty redneck cop, in the back of the shop. I just wrote some shit about them to the BBB. sure as fuck aint going back there...just glad I got my Ak, and got the hell out of there..

I used to get snagged sometimes due to yada yada yada. (I've lived a full life :shh: ) The delay was a headache but with a concealed license now it's cash and carry!

You had it worse than I did. Nobody insinuated that I got my ID at a flee market but one of the store employees insinuated that I had stayed illegally in the US for over 10 years... because in his world either you are a citizen or you are in the US illegally. (I guess tourists are illegals too for him.)

I've never experienced mysterious delays when buying but then again I bought only two guns, both after being naturalized. And my name is not one that profiling-happy officers would latch on.

I had no trouble buying any of the 5 pistols I had, either at gus shows, (yes, with background check) or the 2 different guns stores I go to. Less than 10 minutes and I was out. I have yet to buy one from Cabelas though, I dont ever see a good deal there.

NICs checks have to be completed in 72 hours. Your FFL know that.

I used to get that on long guns (never with the Wisconsin run pistol check). There is someone out there with a name similar enough to you that they go into crazy check mode and it takes a couple of days.

I got tired of that so I filed out the application and sent in a fingerprint card (to go with the other half dozen they have of me  ) and got a NICS Upin. Now no more delays.

My father had to wait for a purchase he made last year, but then, he has the same name as a famous NY gangster...

I've been told by someone who worked in the Fl NICS call center that it's not at all uncommon for these "holds" to translate into plain English as "our computers were down when we got the call".

So it seems the wait thing is pretty normal. I was just kind of ranting because I was way (over)excited about this pistol.

That is good to know. I don't know if he knew that or not. The guy is about 138 years old and does VERY little business, but his fee is low and he was my dad's FFL for a long time. If I don't hear anything within 72 hours I will let him know.

I've never had this happen to me, but it happens to my sarge all the time... something about when he lived in California... I've talked to my local gun shop guys, and what I've been told is NICS does this when they get busy, so it might just be bad luck for you.

I've only had trouble with the first gun I bought as an adult, my VZ24. I got it at Big 5 around the year 2000 or 01 and I was told that they would contact me within 7 days and I could pick it up. I think I let 10 days go by with no word before I went out there. They had no clue. They brought out the rifle and handed it to me saying that, if they haven't heard about it in 7 days, then it was assumed to be OK and they could hand it over.

Never had any sort of a hiccup since.

Beat the hell out of the issue my wife ran into. Resident Alien =/= nonresident, shame the phone call catcher didn't know that. The DHS ID # should have been a clue... Then again, we didn't really need the 22/45 she was going to buy that day.
