Greets from the Sonoran Desert (newguy intro!)

I live in the district that didn't elect the Tea Bag wacko last night. But also the one where our sitting Congresswoman and a bunch of people who came out to talk to her were shot by a deranged man with a Glock. We lost about 18 months of our duly elected Congressional representation because of that.

I'm a gun owning (tho mostly not toting much) liberal, who lives in one of those crazy purplish red states. We're making inroads, but mostly because the thugs on the right haven't figured out that they can't antagonize the Hispanic population and expect to keep winning elections.

I bought a nice new S&W SD9 VE Monday night. Don't know much gun law, other than that in AZ there isn't much. But from the time I walked into the gun shop to the time I walked out the elapsed time was 45 minutes (that include the questionnaire, a phone check, and counting out some cash and change to pay for the weapon.) Way too quick, my opinion, if I was nuckin' futs I think I could hold it together long enough to get a gun, like Gerald Loughner the poster child for controlling who can get a gun. Not much of a cooling off, cooling down period. I would have been willing, was expecting, to wait to get my weapon. I would be willing (would like) to go through some sort of licensing/registering process--I don't think ex-cons, crazy people, or children should have guns. (I know, I know they can get them easily from private party sales or black market.)

Gonna take a concealed carry class, I think. Because I feel fairly handgun ignorant.

Okay, I'm a really liberal gun owner. And I am political and I vote.

So I live in Sunny Tucson, where summers are blistering (it's a dry heat) and mid fall, mid spring and winters are nice.

I live in a blue hair trailer park--nobody here is younger than 50, and mostly there's nobody here from April to October. Gated, in a fairly good part of town. Within about 5 miles of the Sonoran desert outback (the desert here is a hot, dry jungle!) Same for a National Park. And a large National "Forest"--if you drive/ride about 25 miles, you are actually in alpine climate W/ big pine trees and 30 degrees cooler, where the southern most ski area in the US is located.

I have a dog--a 50 lb female Standard Poodle that's very sane. She'll bark viciously, but I'd be surprised if she ever did more. I like sane dogs. That don't shed much.

I don't live fearful and my experience with being a crime victim is pretty limited. I have a weapon because I want one.

I ride a motorcycle, tho unlike most 60 year olds, I don't have a Harley, wear real & complete protective gear, and don't stand all judgmental about the f***in' idiots that ride basically naked and helmetless. Mine is an 08 KLR 650. Lets me go (within reason 'cus I'm 60) anywhere my heart desires.

So here I am--new to this forum.

Welcome from another zonie, this one a 60 year native ! I'm in Verde Valley, nearby but blessedly removed from all the meth cookers and new age gurus.

Welcome.....
Taking gun classes is good.

You would not be alone in pondering the wonders of background checks, we do that here all the time...with the requisite arguments and passion to be sure. It would appear that we don't all agree all of the time, strange as it may seem.

And...no need to obscure your thoughts...if you mean to say 'fuck'...you can say so...nobody is going to censor your thinking for you....

good to have you

Hello from Northern CA, from a place where Babyface Nelson managed to elude the feds by hiding out in the local jail.

The KLR is a fun bike, especially on canyon roads.

Welcome form the City With a Handle, and fellow motorcycle rider and Liberal gun owner.

I think you will find there are many parallels between gun ownership & rights, and issues which face motorcycling.

Since you've already stated you wear protective gear, and expressed interest in taking a safety class, i feel safe in saying that you're our kind of guy. Both worlds needs more people like you setting an example.

As with motorcycle rider training, gun safety and handling training saves lives.

I ride vintage Vespa scooters and a Royal Enfield Bullet, but I bet a 2wd Ural would be way too much fun out there in the desert. :D

Greetings from a former Tucsonan currently residing in Denver! I grew up in Sabino Vista ( Sabino Canyon & Cloud Rd). We moved there in 1977, when that intersection was a blinking yellow light.

Good to meet you myfiero. I used to live in Tucson, now I am in northern NM. We are about the same age.

Absolutely agree. I myself have managed to fake it for well over an hour. :)

My brother the motorcycle collector has a Bullet--and English produced one. Never seems to start when I'm visiting (But then, he's got a Notrun, too.) As for the Ural, from what I've been reading, I'd want a satellite locator before I took it out too far (and a lot of water in the sidecar.) Been reading about how many of them breakdown on the way home from the dealership. . .

We're past the time in the summer where it's advisable to get too far outa town in the outback--coupla hikers died last week of heat stroke. 102 F or so today--but it's a dry heat.
