Corporations are people
http://www.citizenstrade.org/ctc/blog/2 ... porations/
"We will not negotiate bilateral trade agreements that stop the government from protecting the environment, food safety, or the health of its citizens; give greater rights to foreign investors than to U.S. investors; require the privatization of our vital public services; or prevent developing country governments from adopting humanitarian licensing policies to improve access to life-saving medications," reads the campaign document.
Yet nearly all of those vows are violated by the leaked Trans-Pacific document. The one that is not contravened in the present document -- regarding access to life-saving medication -- is in conflict with a previously leaked document on intellectual property (IP) standards.
"Bush was better than Obama on this," said Judit Rius, U.S. manager of Doctors Without Borders Access to Medicines Campaign, referring to the medication rules. "It's pathetic, but it is what it is. The world's upside-down."
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative insists that while broad standards require many medical patents and IP rules that would increase the price of medications, the U.S. intends to work with countries involved in the Trans-Pacific talks to ensure that the agreement does not restrict access to life-saving drugs.

Ah, yep. Center right president acts center-right. This is a surprise?

It is a surprise to some people, and a cause of cognitive dissonance to others.
Alice: "I would have never voted for Bush. Look, Bush did X, and this was sufficient for me not to vote for him. Thank god we have Obama now."
Bob: "Obama also does X and does it 10 times as much as Bush ever did."
Alice: "I'll still vote for Obama next time!"

I will reserve my full judgement for when we see the extent to what this can do. though the part about ignoring the EPA and judges being brought in from the private sector is bad enough.

The only surprise is that this president is believed to be some kind of socialist by a lot of people on the right or he is believed to be some kind of progressive by a lot of people on the left.
I read Obama's book The Audacity Of Hope and he makes it clear that when it comes to trade policy, his primary concern is keeping the professional business class happy.

to be fair you do have to keep them happy. I.E. make america a profitable place to sell to, otherwise those good go somewhere else or they jack prices up to make it profitable. Don't hate the player, hate the system that forces this to be truth.

I don't hate him. I'm just not going to vote for him. And I agree- Obama is playing the game because he is part of the game.

From the HuffPo article on this:
In early June, a tribunal at the World Bank agreed to hear a case involving similar foreign investment standards, in which El Salvador banned cyanide-based gold mining on the basis of objections from the Catholic Church and environmental activists. If the World Bank rules against El Salvador, it could overturn the nation's domestic laws at the behest of a foreign corporation.
...
Basic public health and land-use rules would be subject to challenge before an international tribunal, as would bank regulations at capital levels that might be used to stymie bank runs or financial crises. The IMF has advocated the use of such capital controls, which would be prohibited under the current version of the leaked trade pact. Although several countries have proposed exceptions that would allow them to regulate speculative financial bets, the U.S. has resisted those proposals, according to Public Citizen.
Vote Obamney 2012.

I concur on this issue, although I think Romney would dismantle the country much more quickly.
At the same time, the ruling that corporations are people just reinforces how the country does campaigns for elected office and how office holders (nationally) raise money for reelection.
It's a never ending feedback loop that both parties are disgustingly filthy with raising dirty money to enrich themselves and their campaigns.

Looks to me like we're speeding towards a dystopian cyberpunk future.
So, that's cool at least.

Honestly if we as a people truly believe we are heading unchangeably for a major downfall, is it not better to get there quicker, so we can get that part over with and maybe MAYBE start to rebuild before our children come of age, than to put them through the downfall and put the burden of the clean up on them? I mean if we truly believe that's where we are headed regardless of what we do. It's a different story though, if you think there is something we can do about it.

That's how I look at it anyway. Does that make me an optimist?

I'm not voting this year, and if I do, it'll only be for Congress (I don't want my senator to be the guy whose campaign died six years ago because he shouted racial slurs at a guy working for his opponent).
With the White House, we're screwed either way. If Romney gets it, we're screwed slightly more, but if Obama gets it, Holder's getting a pardon immediately after being convicted, just like Oliver North.

I'm sick and tired of being in a swing state and having 70% of my television ads be political, and it's always the SAME FUCKING ADS REPEATED AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Try being in a safe state that still advertises.

Sometimes I wish that I could read a statement like this and say "man, this guy is really rambling." Unfortunately I understand. RDWHAHB

Sorry, but that's as much consolation as I could muster.

The only TV we watch is the Liberal Gun Club.
We get our blood pressure up enough with that.

TV ads are not the worst of it. The wars are not going to end and our friend in the White House is gearing up for more.
"The strong words from Paris come after reports that US President Barack Obama has asked the US Navy and Air Force to accelerate plans that would aid in the ousting of Assad."

Ditching the TV was one of the best things I've could have done. So many better ways to waste time.

The only thing worse is being in a non-swing state and knowing your future is being determined by a handful of Bubbas in Ohio or Florida.

Maybe you should move to someplace where your vote makes a difference, Larry.

Which boardroom is that?
