Favorite horror movies?

So what are yours?

I'm feeling a little dragged down tonight so I feel like watching something while I fall asleep to take my mind off of things. You might ask why I'd want to watch a horror movie while trying to go to sleep... Well, I never really got worked up about horror and gore movies. I do remember watching one on HBO sometime in the early 80s that scared the crap out of me when I was about 5 years old... It was about some snow monster...I think it might have been called "Snowbeast"...I just did a quick google search. Looks like a B movie at best. That one kind of freaked me out but, again, I was probably 5 years old. I got over it pretty quickly. Think I might go with either "The Ring" from 2002 or the original "Halloween" tonight. I don't think I've ever seen either. I think the ones that actually scare me legit are the plausible ones, like someone breaking into my apartment and screwing with me...think "Saw" or something like "The Hills Have Eyes" where I might be put into a real-life horror where someone either kidnaps me or fucks with me when I'm on my own out in the middle of nowhere with no one to rely but myself. But even then, I've always felt smarter than the dumbasses in horror movies. Who's gonna screw with me when I keep a .357 on my dresser or a 12ga in my truck within arm's reach when I'm sleeping, right?

Anyway...Which movies actually scare the shit out of you? I'm kinda getting bored with the genre.

I don't know if it's a horror movie per se, but I was really terrified by a movie called "The Fourth Kind", about alien abductions, etc.

It has a lot of really good actors and it was written and sold as a docudrama. People were very upset when they found it was fiction!

I saw it by accident while surfing the high channels on my Dish early one morning...and I made the mistake of recording it.

Halloween was good. But John Carpenter's best movie was The Thing ( 1982 ). One of the all- time horror greats, a thinking man's horror movie, despite the gross- out scenes.

Came here to say the Thing but Comedian beat me to it.

I'm in that camp that considers Alien a horror movie. Also the Werner Herzog remake of Nosferatu.

I saw Shadow Of The Vampire recently, a horror movie about the making of Nosferatu. John Malkovich plays Walter Morneau, the director of Nosferatu, and Willem Dafoe is Count Orlock/ Max Schrek. It's a trip.
You can pick up the DVD on Amazon for under $10.00.

Alien. Only the first & best one. Scared the piss out of me when I saw in the theater. Also made me a permanent Signory Weaver fan ;)

Not really a "horror" film, but The Zodiac was pretty intense. The scene at the lake with the college couple freaked my ass out. And this stuff really happened. The guy was never actually caught.

The only film that scared me. I was 7.
I was convinced my stepfather was one of them.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a 1956 American science fiction film directed by Don Siegel and starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter. Daniel Mainwaring adapted the screenplay from Jack Finney's 1954 novel The Body Snatchers.

The story depicts an extraterrestrial invasion in a small California town. The invaders replace human beings with duplicates that appear identical on the surface but are devoid of any emotion or individuality. A local doctor uncovers what is happening and tries to stop them.

In 1994, Invasion of the Body Snatchers was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

The invaders replace human beings with duplicates that appear identical on the surface but are devoid of any emotion or individuality.

I love Ken Russel's The Devils. I'm not sure that it scares me, but I'm pretty sure it did the first time I saw it. Then again, I first saw it in a condition where the movie had "help" impressing me.

these are just the ones i can remember:

Alien
The Thing
Event horizon (not so famous, fucked with my head the first time I saw it)
Descent ( cheaply made, but scary enough)

i cant rember the rest, but usually any movie where a group of people are stranded and have to survive from some unkown monster (as long as the special effects are good, and suspense music,.... usually anything Spiellberg, or Carpenter make) I've watched seemingly good moveis that turned into crap just cause of the suspense music, wrong type, wrong time. I was never into movies with ghosts, and movies with human attacker never scared me cause I know I can whoot them with my Ak47, but alien from another world, you dont really know what they are made of, if they have regenerative powers, if thye bleed acid,..... you know

I ended up watching The Ring last night. Kind of a snoozer for me, but I did like watching Naomi Watts. What can I say, except that I'm a heterosexual male? Maybe I'll revisit Alien sometime soon. That's a good one.

Evil dead, seen in the middle of summer when I was like ten. That sort of set the tone for horror to be fun entertainment, and I like the evil dead series, 28 days/weeks later, hills have eyes bunch. The movies that scare me are sometimes lumped in with horror but are better described as 'terror' - the ones that could actually happen. Like Cujo, or The Strangers.

@Jay: That trailer of "The Strangers" reminded me of "Vacancy". I like the more plausible horror/terror/whatever-you-want-to-call-it ones also.

Call me crazy, but I actually think movies like "The Thing", "Alien", or "Predator" are plausible. (Maybe I just have wishful thinking...because wouldn't it be so damn interesting if an alien came to Earth?...maybe I should wish for more of an E.T.-like being, though...)

Well not horror in the tradidional sense but it was directed by Roman Polanski, who has a taste for little girls, and it is a downright creepy movie. The name, "Repulsion" Was out in 1965 or so and at the theatre where i saw it they had a creepy short as a warm up. Have no idea of its name but the plot basically was of a beach with folks fishing. A man walking along, spies a sandwich lying on the beach. He picks it up and takes a bite and a hook rips through his jaw and he is reeled into the surf. Great warm up! Anyway if you have not seen Repulsion, do so!

I did like Carpenter's The Thing as well.

What freaked me out as a kid was The Shining.

I don't know if it is proper in the genre of horror, (it's dark comedy as well) but Street Trash is so bad it is good. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094057/

[REC] and [REC]2 are really good movies and an interesting and fresh take on the zombie genre.
