My mom called me while I was on my way home from work a few minutes ago to tell me this. The site is about three hours' drive time from me, and much closer to my friend Hiker's abode.

Some of you may remember a shooter in Louisville a couple years ago--that one was about three blocks from my workplace.

And, sadly, as you say, there will be more calls to ban AR-platform bang sticks, despite that it's not the fault of the bang stick.
Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Knowing Hiker, I'm fairly certain she's already aware. I know her to stay armed and vigilant on the regular.

I'm not sure I have her current phone number, but I'll try the one I have.

I happened to be listening to the broadcast when they announced “no shirt guy firing at random” and gave a street name. Given that development I’m slightly surprised the perp is still on the loose.

Seriously though, this is an hour and a half from me, so I'm in no danger.
There is a great lack of info on this shooting. At one point it was a guy shooting at car from an overpass, then it was he shot at a truck stop at the same exit, then he was shooting at family members at the truck stop. Since it is Eastern Kentucky, you can hear gunfire from numerous locations. Neighbors you would normally ignore it are now calling it in, so the guy was believed to be in several places. The guy purchased the AR and 2000 rounds the morning of the shooting and told a relative that a lot of people were going to die. A regional prepping group seems to think this is a militia group of 4 shooters.

See, CDFingers? I told you I wasn't too worried! ;-)

Hiker, I'm glad you are good, dear friend!

I've seen a couple live streamed pressers from the Laurel County Sheriff, discussing that they found a vehicle they're pretty sure was his and a rifle that they are pretty sure was the weapon of concern, but of course cannot speculate as to whether he has other weapons or to how well he knows the area. A mug shot from a couple years ago has been posted online.

“I’m going to kill a lot of people. Well try at least,” Joseph Couch wrote in his text, the arrest warrant says. In another message, sent less than half an hour before the shooting, he allegedly wrote, “I’ll kill myself afterwards…” The woman called 911 after receiving the alarming texts, according to the warrant. She later showed police screenshots of the text during an interview early Sunday. Authorities are continuing to search for Couch, 32, who has evaded capture since Saturday afternoon, when authorities say he fired an AR-15 from a cliff ledge on the side of the interstate about nine miles north of London, Kentucky, striking 12 cars and wounding five people. The day of the shooting, Couch purchased an AR-15 with a sight and 1,000 rounds of ammunition, paying almost $3,000 in total, the arrest warrant says. The sheriff’s office has said he made the purchases legally.

An arrest warrant has been issued charging Couch with five counts of attempted murder and five counts of first-degree assault, Jackie Steele, the commonwealth attorney for Laurel and Knox Counties, told CNN. Police say they’re hoping constant pressure and an intense search effort involving drones, helicopters, dogs and dozens of officers will lead to the suspect’s capture. Crews from federal, state and local agencies are scouring the vast, densely wooded area near where responders found Couch’s AR-15, ammunition, car and a phone thought to be his. “Our goal is to apply steady pressure and wear Mr. Couch down the longer he is in the woods,” Kentucky State Police spokesperson Scottie Pennington said at a news conference Monday afternoon. “Hopefully he has no water and nothing to eat.”

The remote area of the Daniel Boone National Forest encompasses thousands of acres and includes sinkholes, caves, culverts, creeks and rivers. In some places, officers are using machetes to slice through thick brush, Pennington said earlier. Though the motive is still unknown, the attack appeared to be a “random act” of violence, Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said, according to The Associated Press. A $15,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to Couch’s arrest, according to Kentucky State Police.

I'm totally glad! He's still out there uncaptured, so keep heads on a swivel. Were I to advise him, I'd say give up, because no one has been killed. He can get help. These types unfortunately do suicide by cop or self. Hoping for best outcome.

A grueling manhunt for the suspect wanted in a highway shooting spree stretched into its fifth day as authorities said they believe he retreated deep into a forested swath of southeastern Kentucky with no indication he has fled elsewhere. The search for Joseph A. Couch, a former Army reservist, has used helicopters and drones equipped with infrared technology, while special response teams and trained dogs are tracking him across thousands of acres likened to a jungle. Troopers are hacking through thick vegetation with machetes and scouring the sandstone cliffsides and caves for any sign they're advancing closer.

Officials said Couch, 32, wounded five people Saturday evening in what appeared to be a random attack, and they fear he is determined to kill. As efforts continued Thursday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said at a news conference that four of the victims have since been released from the hospital with the fifth “expected to survive.” Law enforcement officials are also asking the public for tips of any sightings of Couch and maintain he must be desperate and dehydrated if he remains alive in the woods. “If he’s dead or alive,” Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Scottie Pennington told reporters this week, “it’s our job to try to find him.”
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office would later determine that at least 12 vehicles were struck, and some drivers were unaware of the damage until they arrived at their destinations. Five people sustained gunshot wounds, some to the face, arms and chest, none of which were life-threatening, police said. They believe as many as 20 to 30 rounds may have been fired. The same day, they had a person of interest. And not before long, arrest warrants had been issued for Couch on five counts of attempted murder and five counts of first-degree assault.
Meanwhile, details from Couch’s life have emerged as local, state and federal agencies band together to locate him. He was in the Army Reserve from 2013 to 2019 and served as a combat engineer before he was honorably discharged, state police and a military spokesperson said. London Mayor Randall Weddle told NBC News that Couch was never deployed, adding that family members also informed investigators that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Amid the search, authorities went to his home in Woodbine, about 23 miles from the shooting site, to collect evidence. His criminal record consists of a dismissal in March of a misdemeanor charge of making a terroristic threat that involved an argument with a man with a dog, as well as at least one alleged traffic violation, local prosecutors said. The text messages Couch reportedly sent Saturday after he bought a firearm suggest a fragile state of mind. With law enforcement uncertain about Couch’s whereabouts, schools in Laurel County remain closed out of precaution, and some businesses are offering only drive-thru service.

People who know the area better than I have suggested the possibility that he has found one of the many small caves in the area, holed up, and ended his own life. They say this might be why thermal imaging systems are having trouble finding him.

I cannot speak to this beyond that it is but one of any number of possible scenarios.

The shooting location is just a little over 1 mile from a railroad. The track has lots of curves that the train would have slowed down for. He could be in Florida now.

So nut job still on the loose, same as turd! Sigh! I really don't know how we can protect ourselves from random shooters. We had a 28 year old teacher on an open air roof bar a few weeks ago and she was hit and killed by a random shooter drive by from a nearby expressway. Last ten days three separate driver rage shootings and several house shot up for no apparent reason. Crazy friggin' world. All this shit is really having an effect on my attitudes towards guns and that pisses me off.

Stay safe Hiker!
