Dallas ISD shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School

DALLAS — Multiple law enforcement agencies responded Friday morning to a shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in southeast Dallas, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue officials.

Police sources told WFAA that one student was injured and a suspect in the incident, also a student at the school, was taken into custody around 11 a.m.

The incident was initially reported shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue officials.

Sources told WFAA that the incident happened inside the "G" building at the school near the football fieldhouse, and then the suspect was taken into custody after running toward the school football field. The weapon – a handgun according to Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez – was recovered by police, officials said in a press conference Friday afternoon.

The injured student was expected to be OK. Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde, Ed.D., said in a press conference Friday afternoon that the injured student had non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement sources told WFAA that they believe the suspected shooter and their victim knew one another.

At 11:15 a.m., Dallas Independent School District officials said in a statement that "all students and team members are safe" at the school.

"Police are on site to ensure our school remains secure," Dallas ISD officials said in the statement. "At this time, we ask everyone to refrain from coming to the campus, as we limit access inside."

Wilmer-Hutchins High School, which is part of the Dallas ISD, is located on Langdon Road, near Interstate 45 and Interstate 20.

Parents of students at Wilmer-Hutchins Hugh School confirmed to WFAA that there are metal detectors at the school. Dallas ISD also instituted a new policy for the 2023-2024 school year requiring all students to use clear backpacks.

It is not clear at this point how the handgun got into the school. Superintendent Elizalde said in the press conference Friday she did not yet have an answer to that question.

Several Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulances and fire trucks were seen in the school parking lot, and several police cars were seen surrounding the campus.

Wilmer-Hutchins High School, which is part of the Dallas ISD, is located on Langdon Road, near Interstate 45 and Interstate 20. The news shows only shootings. I don't understand what's going on in people's heads. Moreover, this is happening more and more often in schools. Yesterday my daughter and I wrote a paper on the topic “the importance of being earnest”, we found here a lot of useful information about it. Today I’m already scared to send her to school. I don't know what could happen, but now I will constantly think about it.

Addressing root causes calls for a long term commitment of money (really BIG amounts), personnel (lots of trained dedicated and well paid folk), infrastructure (Child care, health care, housing, jobs, education ...), as well as legal reforms, societal education and some method to assure those things continue as stable projects over a multi decade, multi generation time span.

Reality for politicians is that they need to be able to point to results before the next election.

If the politician just passes a bill it costs nothing and shows they did something. They passed a bill.

And the Christian Cult of Ignorance needs to be exposed as the perversion of everything Jesus supposedly told folk to do and that the Bible says God tells folk what needs to be addressed but then the people need to build the ship, prepare in the fat years for the lean years and then actually feed the hungry, comfort the sorrowful, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless and protect the weak.

The problem is addressing root causes requires work and wisdom and it's far easier to "Pray" than Do.
