Old people wake up early, and I feel so old I woke up yesterday (grumble, grumble, and moan, groan, wail, squeak, whistle, pop). This morning in the back yard as the sun rose I could detect the color change in the leaves of a few trees. When the sun gets higher, this small tint disappears. It's a brownish orange hue in the maples and the Chinese pistache. Man, when it goes all the way that pistache positively radiates red and orange and yellow all at the same time. A stunning tree for those who seek color. The maples are sort of second fiddle to the pistache, but they too provide excellent colors. My next door neighbor has a lace leaf Japanese maple that has red leaves during its leafy times, and they go a bit more red then to brown. It's not as exciting as my dwarf maples with their small leaves. Next month the ginko across the street will go gold, which is pretty neat. I've been cleaning out the brown leaves from my bulbs and getting the vegetable garden ready for its new layer of compost. This may very well be my favorite time of the year, but, at my age, waking up still alive is pretty cool no matter what the calendar says. Weather so fine, man, so fine. 80's in the day and high 50's at night. Just sweet all the way around. One down side is the cat is getting her winter coat, so I can begin to look forward to massive shedding in the spring. Small downside to cats.
